Memorial Day events in the local Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia area

Here are some of the Memorial Day events occurring in the Tri-State area, starting this weekend.

Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg, W.Va.

4 p.m. Friday, May 24 — Rosedale Cemetery, 917 Cemetery Road, Martinsburg, W.Va. Rosedale's third annual Memorial Day celebration. Includes a cruise-in car show (no entry fee, top 10 plaque awards, Scouts choice awards), with cars starting to arrive at 4 p.m. and judging by Scouts at 5:45 p.m. There is a veterans' salute at 6 p.m. and an awards ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Free hot dogs, popcorn and snow cones; face painting; children's activities; door prizes; new gas grill give-away. In the event of rain, event will be cancelled.

Sharpsburg Memorial Day parade

11 a.m., Saturday, May 25 — Sharpsburg Town Square, intersection of Main and Mechanic streets, Sharpsburg. Hosted by the Town of Sharpsburg. Wreath-laying ceremony on the square at 11 a.m. The keynote speakers are James Warner, a Marine Corps veteran who was a Vietnam War prisoner of war, and retired Col. Richard "Dick" Hembrock, a Vietnam War veteran. The Memorial Day parade, which this year recognizes the service of Vietnam War veterans, begins at 2 p.m.

Downtown Boonsboro

1 p.m., Sunday, May 26 — Downtown Boonsboro. Sponsored by the Boonsboro Clopper-Michael American Legion Unit No. 10 Auxiliary. Wreath-laying ceremony and memorial service in front of Boonsboro Town Hall at 1 p.m. Memorial Day parade along Main Street at 2 p.m. Keynote speaker is Starlene Hamilton, retired with the U.S. Marine Corps and a teacher at Boonsboro High School. Parade includes marching band with Boonsboro Middle and Boonsboro High students, Rohersville Band, majorette groups, antique cars and first responders. Parade starts at school campus and goes to Reeder's Alley.

Downtown Hagerstown

1:30 p.m., Sunday, May 26 — In front of the Washington County Circuit Courthouse at the corner of Summit Avenue and West Washington Street in downtown Hagerstown. Hosted by Morris Frock American Legion Post No. 42. Keynote speaker is Lt. Col. Eric J. Brenner, who is attending the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pa. Local musician Jeff Taulton will perform the national anthem and other music. Hagerstown Mayor Tekesha Martinez and Councilmember Matthew J. Schindler will be among those who will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony. After this ceremony, Martinez and Schindler also will lay wreaths at the memorial monument near the entrance to Rose Hill Cemetery, at the Vietnam War Veterans Monument along South Walnut Street near City Park, at the Medal of Honor Triangle along Jonathan Street, at the Korean War Veterans Memorial along Potomac Avenue at the Mealey Parkway traffic island, and at the Spanish-American War Memorial at Bloom Park at the corner of North Potomac Street and East North Avenue.

Waynesboro, Pa., parade and ceremony

9 a.m., Monday, May 27 — Waynesboro, Pa. The Waynesboro Combined Veterans Council is sponsoring a parade followed by a ceremony at Memorial Park. The parade starts at 9 a.m. and goes down Main Street, turning right onto South Broad Street and ending at the park. The grand marshal is Korean War veteran Lester Little. The guest speaker will be Col. Erin Frazier from the U.S. Army War College. If it rains and pours, the ceremony will move inside to the American Legion.

Greencastle, Pa., parade and ceremony

10:30 a.m., Monday, May 27 — Greencastle, Pa. The Harry D. Zeigler Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6319 is hosting a Memorial Day parade and a ceremony following the parade. The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. by the Lillian S. Besore Memorial Library and heads west on Baltimore Street to the Cedar Lawn Cemetery. The parade will include the Greencastle-Antrim High School Band, Scout troops, local businesses, local veterans and first-responders. Following the parade, and no earlier than 11:30 a.m., a ceremony will be held at the cemetery. The keynote speaker is John Schlehr, a U.S. Department of Defense civilian employee currently attending the U.S. Army War College. The ceremony will include music by the high school band and a rifle salute.

Antietam National Cemetery near Sharpsburg

11 a.m., Monday, May 27 — Antietam National Cemetery, 320 E. Main St., Sharpsburg. Hosted by the National Park Service. The keynote speaker is retired U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Ty Seidule, who is professor emeritus of history at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and is a visiting professor of history at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y. During his 36-year Army career, Seidule served as an armor and cavalry officer in command and staff positions. He served in Germany, Italy, the Balkans, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Kenya. Seidule is a presidential advisor to the National World War II Museum in New Orleans and author of "Robert E. Lee and Me: A Southerner's Reckoning with the Myth of the Lost Cause." Hagerstown Choral Arts will provide music. Antietam National Battlefield's volunteer group Battery B, 4th U.S. Artillery, will do a cannon salute. Master Sgt. Geoff Blankenship and retired Chief Master Sgt. Ron Glazer of the 167th Airlift Wing, Martinsburg, W.Va., will perform taps. Sharpsburg Elementary School fifth-graders, per tradition, will have placed 5,000 flags at the cemetery, one for every headstone.

Halfway MD African American Cemetery

11 a.m., Monday, May 27 — Halfway MD African American Cemetery, 11027 Clinton Ave. in Halfway. Hosted by Friends of Halfway MD African American Cemetery. The ceremony will honor the 15 veterans (14 from the Civil War and one from World War I) buried there and will include a reading of their names. There will be brief remarks by descendants. Parking is along the street.

Rest Haven Funeral Home and Cemetery, Hagerstown

11 a.m., Monday, May 27 — Rest Haven Funeral Home and Cemetery, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. The Memorial Day commemoration includes live music, prayer, a reading and the flying of dozens of American flags that once draped local veterans' caskets. Speaker is Pastor Don Stevenson. A bagpiper will perform "Amazing Grace" and more. Volunteer buglers and trumpeters will play echo taps. The Appalachian Wind Quintet will perform.

Marty Snook Park, Halfway

9 a.m., Thursday, May 30 — Martin “Marty” L. Snook Memorial Park at 17901 Halfway Blvd. Hosted by the Joint Veterans Council of Washington County. Includes wreath-laying, songs, rifle volley and taps.

Smithsburg Veterans Park

4 p.m., Thursday, May 30 — Smithsburg Veterans Park by the war memorials. The keynote speaker will be retired Lt. Col. Mike Bowers with the U.S. Marine Corps. The Smithsburg High School Chorus will sing the national anthem. The Joint Veterans Council of Washington County and the Marine Corps League will present the colors.
