Memorial Day 2024: Remembrance ceremonies, parades planned in York County

Several Memorial Day parades and ceremonies are planned in York County on Monday to remember U.S. military service personnel who lost their lives.

Here are some of the events that are happening:

York County Memorial Day ceremony

The annual York County Memorial Day wreath-laying ceremony will be held Monday at the Veterans Memorial Gold Star Healing and Peace Garden, 1000 Vander Avenue in York.

It is open to the public.

The musical prelude starts at 10:45 a.m., a news release states.

The ceremony, hosted by the York County Department of Veterans Affairs, will honor Specialist Fourth Class James Brent Brown. The York native was deployed to Vietnam, where he was killed in action. He received the Purple Heart, a military award given to U.S. service members who are injured or killed in action.

Vietnam Veteran MAJ (USA-Ret) Donald Androsky will be the keynote speaker, the release states. York County Director of Veterans Affairs Kevin Smyers will be the master of ceremonies, and York County President Commissioner Julie Wheeler will lead the wreath-laying ceremony.

Hanover Memorial Day parade and services

The annual Memorial Day Parade will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Monday May 27, according to Hanover borough.

The parade marshal is Brian J. Couse. It is sponsored by the Allied Veterans Council of Hanover.

The parade forms at 7:30 a.m. on Carlisle Street between Chestnut Street and Library Place, according to the borough.

It will proceed on Route 94 South through Center Square onto Baltimore Street. It will end at Mount Olivet Cemetery for services near the Soldier's Monument.

Lebanon Cemetery ceremony (Taps Across America)

Taps will be played at the historic Black Lebanon Cemetery in North York at 3 p.m. Monday, May 27.

It is part of the National Moment of Remembrance. Musicians across the country will sound Taps at 3 p.m.

The ceremony will be held at the front entrance to the cemetery, 1412 N. George St.

Etters Memorial Day Parade (Newberry Township)

The Etters VFW Memorial Day Parade will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 27 in Newberry Township.

The parade will start at Parkville Bible Church, 850 Whisler Road, and travel along York Haven and Paddletown roads to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 355 Church Road.

Registration is not required to participate in the parade, according to Michele Christine, parade coordinator. The lineup begins at 9:30 a.m.

A service will follow about 11 a.m. at the Paddletown Cemetery located at the intersection of Church and Rabbit Slide roads.

West York Memorial Day parade

The West York VFW Post 8951 will be holding its annual Memorial Day parade and ceremony at the West York Memorial Plaza on Monday, May 27.

The parade starts at 9 a.m., borough manager Shawn Mauck said.

The parade route includes West Market Street, North Highland Avenue, West Philadelphia Street, North Sumner Street and Orange Street.

A ceremony will be held at the West York Memorial Plaza, which is located at Orange and Adams streets.

Wrightsville Memorial Day parade

The Wrightsville Memorial Day parade, hosted by the American Legion Post 469, will start a 1 p.m. Monday, May 27, according to the borough.

The parade route is along Route 462 from South Second Street to Seventh Street.

A service will be held at Fairview Cemetery following the parade.
