Melissa Reeves out at ‘Days of Our Lives’ months after fans and co-stars' backlash over Candace Owens backing

Salem has lost one of its leading ladies.

Melissa Reeves, who has portrayed beloved “Days of Our Lives” character Jennifer Horton off and on since 1985, is not returning to the long-running daytime drama, reported Soap Opera Digest.

A “Days of Our Lives” rep confirmed that Reeves' character had been recast.

When production resumed in September after a lengthy hiatus brought on by the COVID-19 outbreak, Reeves opted not to return to work, according to Soap Opera Digest.

The 53-year-old actress, who commutes from her Tennessee home to Los Angeles, has been criticized by fans and colleagues alike since June, when she showed support for anti-Black Lives Matter social media posts by far-right firebrand Candace Owens, according to TV Line.

“Maybe we’d all be happier letting (liberals) pick a few states they can turn into their own country (with) no guns, no police, no statues, no genders, no flags, no men and no electricity,” Owens wrote on Instagram in late June.

“I’m absolutely disgusted and sick right now and I am no longer in any denials about how (Reeves) feels,” wrote Twitter user The Pool is CLOSED in June in response to Reeves, after she “liked” the incendiary message. “Take a look at a couple of disgusting and racist Instagram posts she liked.”

Reeves had courted controversy back in 2012 for showing her support for devoutly Christian business Chick-fil-A.

“Chick-fil-A today!!!! Loved every bite of it," wrote Reeves at the time. "Land of the free and home of the brave. Love that we all appreciate free speech, right?”

Reeves' approval of the gay-unfriendly company as well as Owens' comments have not gone over well with “Days” co-stars, including Martha Madison and Linsey Godfrey.

One of the besieged actress' backers, who tried to make the point that Reeves was entitled to her opinion, was slammed by Godfrey on social media.

Sunny Hostin appalled by Meghan McCain's choice of Joe Rogan to moderate presidential debate

"Supporting a company that donates money to gay-conversion therapies and is actively anti-LGBTQ+ is OK with you? Not supporting BLM IS OK with you? There is no difference in opinion when it comes to racism, homophobia, transphobia or xenophobia. Period. Ever, tweeted Godfrey on June 24.

While Reeves remained hush throughout the summer, her daughter Emily Smith defended her mother with a scorched-earth tweet in which she attacked liberals as being bigoted and hypocritical.

Soap veteran Cady McClain, who had lengthy stints on “All My Children” and “As the World Turns,” will assume the Jennifer Horton role, according to Soap Opera Digest.
