Melissa Joan Hart Says Racy Pics Almost Got Her Fired From 'Sabrina'

Melissa Joan Hart most certainly solidified herself as a '90s icon with her starring roles in Clarissa Explains It All and Sabrina the Teenage Witch, but she almost jeopardized it all, posing nearly nude for the cover of a magazine.

The actress and producer, now 47, rehashed the ordeal while appearing on the Pod Meets World podcast hosted by former Boy Meets World cast members Danielle Fishel, Will Friedle and Rider Strong. Hart explained that it all unfolded the night of the Drive Me Crazy premiere in 1999.

"While I’m at the [after-party], my lawyer shows up and goes, ‘You did a photo shoot for Maxim magazine?'” Hart recalled. “I’m like: ‘Yes, I did.’ They’re like: ‘Well, you’re being sued and fired from your show, so don’t talk to the press, don’t do anything.'”

Hart continued, “So I get a phone call on my cell phone from my mother, my producer, who was like, what did you do?, And I was like, ‘I don’t know, whatever my publicist told me to do at the photo shoot. I did a photo shoot for Maxim! It’s Maxim, of course you’re gonna be in your underwear."

The photo was run on the cover, along with the title: "Sabrina, your favorite witch without a stitch!"

Hart was told she had violated her contract with Archie Comics, which didn’t allow her to "play the character naked." She said "nothing came of it" as it was the magazine's doing and not her own, so she went on to write an apology letter and was allowed to keep her job until the series ended in 2003.

But Sabrina wasn't the only project Hart was working on at the time. Elsewhere in the conversation, she explained that she wasn't even supposed to be at the aforementioned after-party.

After walking the red carpet, Hart said she was originally supposed to leave the screening to shoot her part in the parody horror film Scary Movie, where she “was supposed to be the opening, vivacious, big-breasted one that’s murdered or something in the beginning."

"And I was put in a limo, and I was taken away, and I had just broken up with my boyfriend while we were in the movie, and I’m crying and I’m upset," Hart recalled. The Melissa & Joey alum said she then received a phone call telling her she had just been dropped from the horror comedy and to head over to an after-party at Planet Hollywood instead.

It's currently unclear if Hart was fired from Scary Movie because of the Maxim shoot or for other unrelated reasons.
