Melissa Barrera responds to Scream reunion on new movie Abigail

Melissa Barrera has spoken about the Scream reunion that took place while making her new movie Abigail.

The actor is back with a new horror movie, although this time it's about vampires rather than film-obsessed teenagers. It's been directed by the duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who previously worked on Scream VI.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Barrera spoke about how she enjoyed getting to work with the directors again.

"I obviously would want to work with them forever, but I wanted to read the script first and see if I was right for it," she said.

"I wouldn't want them to cast me in something because we're friends and because they know me. I would want to know that I am the best person for the role and that I can do a great job with it."

Barrera continued: "I read the script, loved it, love vampires, always wanted to be in a vampire movie and I knew that Matt and Tyler were going to do something really special and unique with it. It was a no-brainer for me."

She praised the duo for their commitment to practical effects as well, stating that: "Being covered in blood is amazing... [I] like the fact that this was, everything was real on the set. We didn't green screen anything, everything was practical.

"Even the bodies in the pool, even when Abigail's arm gets blown off, they made an arm for her that grew in, so we could see that happening. It helps as an actor to actually be on the set with the props and everything you're reacting to, instead of having to imagine it.

"It felt like old school Hollywood, everything is practical and real and built and you can play with it and touch it, and that obviously helps performance."

Barrera was dropped from Scream 7 last November, with confirmation soon following that her on-screen sister Jenna Ortega and the movie's director Christopher Landon had quit.

However, Neve Campbell is returning for the next movie, after leaving the franchise ahead of Scream VI due to a pay dispute. Campbell will team up with series creator Kevin Williamson, who will direct Scream 7.

Abigail is released in cinemas on April 19.
