Meet President Biden's Daughter Ashley Biden
Ashley Biden is President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden's only daughter, but despite being First Daughter, she often shies away from the spotlight.
"It took about two years to get into the groove of being in this position," she told Elle in 2023. "I’m doing my work as I always have been, but kind of figuring out the role as First Daughter, and how can I use it in the most positive way, where it’s not about me, it’s about Americans. And what I’ve learned is, I want to tell the story of others—I want to lift up organizations and share this information."
This year, however, she's made more public appearances, including at State Dinners at the White House and at a White House Pride Month event, where she spoke:
Ashley is set to introduce her father at the Democratic National Convention tonight. Here, everything you need to know about Joe and Jill's daughter Ashley:
Ashley was born in Wilmington, Delaware.
She was born on June 8, 1981, the daughter of Joe and Jill Biden. She had older half siblings Beau Biden and Hunter Biden. Growing up, Ashley didn't realize her dad was a Senator. "My family really did keep it super down-to-earth so I didn’t know," Ashley said. "I knew Dad took the train and was trying to solve the problems of the world. But as a little girl, he’s just Dad."
She attended Wilmington Friends School and Tulane University.
She attended high school at Wilmington Friends School in Delaware, then got her bachelor’s degree in cultural anthropology in 2003 from Tulane University.
She is a social worker.
In 2010, she graduated from the University of Pennsylvania's School of Social Policy and Practice with a master's in social work. Initially, she thought she wanted to be a therapist, but decided to focus on policy instead.
"The only thing my parents always said to me was, 'Follow your passion.' There was never any pressure to go into service, but I saw my mother, a teacher, and my dad, who was working on issues Americans care about," Ashley says of her career.
In 2019, she left her job at the Delaware Center for Justice to work on her dad's presidential campaign. She's currently applying for a doctorate in clinical social work at Penn, and one day, she hopes to teach.
She attends some White House events with her parents.
Ashley has joined her parents during a few key events during Joe's tenure as president, including joining her dad at a Juneteenth concert (above) and her mom on a trip to France last summer (below).
Most notably, Ashley joined her mom, Jill, at the royal wedding of Crown Prince Hussein and Rajwa Al Saif. She and her mom arrived hand-in-hand to Zahran Palace, where they were greeted by King Abdullah and Queen Rania ahead of the ceremony.
Ashley married Dr. Howard Krein in 2012.
They had an interfaith Catholic-Jewish wedding. Dr. Krein is an otolaryngologist and plastic surgeon at Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals in Philadelphia. In July 2024, when President Biden spoke about ending his reelection campaign from the Oval Office, Ashley was pictured sitting next to her husband:
