Meet the nominees for Press Citizen's high school Athletes of the Week for Jan.22-28

Athletes in the Iowa City area put on elite-level performances during an exciting week in high school sports.

The IGHSAU girls state wrestling tournament will be held on Feb. 1-2 at Xtream Arena in Coralville. The boys state wrestling tournament will follow a couple weeks later. The girls and boys basketball state tournaments also are rapidly approaching.

Here are the nominees for the Press-Citizen’s high school Athlete of the Week for Jan. 22-28. Press-Citizen.com readers can vote to decide this week's winners.

Grace Fincham, West High

Fincham led the West High girls basketball team to a 64-47 win over Dubuque Hempstead on Jan. 22.

Fincham finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and two assists. She also shot efficiently — shooting 9-of-15 from the field.

Tessa Driscoll, Iowa City High

Driscoll played well despite City High’s 57-55 loss at Linn-Mar on Jan. 23.

Driscoll scored a team-high 20 points with six 3-pointers. She also had eight assists and snatched five rebounds.

Trinity Myers, West High

Myers earned her first state appearance with a strong performance at the IGHSAU Region Six Super Regional Tournament on Jan. 26.

She won second place at 120 pounds. Her run in the tournament included a fall over Liberty’s Ruth Luyeye.

Evelyn Eggleston, Liberty

Eggleston earned her ticket to the girls wrestling state tournament with a first-place finish at regionals on Jan. 26.

The 135-pounder earned three wins by fall. In the final, she pinned Bettendorf’s Morgan Strief at the 5:14 mark to take home first place. The victory extended her record to 32-5.

Callie Levin, Solon

Levin dropped a career-high 40 points against Regina on Jan. 27.

The four-year starter also grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out four assists to help the Spartans win their 14th game of the season.

Martin had a strong road performance for the Regals when they faced Tipton on Jan. 23.

The Regals’ sharpshooter finished with 22 points on 8-of-9 from the field. He contributed from behind-the-arc with three 3-pointers.

Andrew Rotzoll, Clear Creek Amana

Rotzoll scored 26 points on 11-of-19 from the field in a 80-44 win over Vinton-Shellsburg on Jan. 23. He also made four 3-pointers.

Rotzoll’s strong performance helped the Clippers earn their eighth win of the season.

Vince Steinbrech, Solon

Steinbrech helped Solon get past rival Regina on Jan. 27.

The fourth-year Spartan scored 21 points on 89% shooting from the field. He also grabbed nine rebounds and tallied three assists.

Justin Avila, Iowa City West

Avila delivered a strong performance on the mat during the Mississippi Valley Conference Tournament on Jan. 27.

The third-year Trojan had three falls in four matches to earn first place at 150 pounds. In the final, Avila earned a technical fall over Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Cael Smithhart to push his record to 29-3.

Cale Seaton, Iowa City High

Seaton took home first place at 132 pounds during the MVC Tournament on Jan. 27.

Seaton earned three wins by fall. He pinned Prairie’s Tyler Lee at 3:33 in the finals which extended his season record to 25-0.
