Meet the nominees for Press-Citizen's Athletes of the Week, May 20-26

From softball and baseball to substate soccer and state tennis, the Iowa City area was jam-packed with action this past week.

Iowa City High, Iowa City West and Regina Catholic boys punched their ticket to the boys state soccer tournament while Liberty clinched its spot in the girls state tournament for the first time in program history.

Here are the nominees for the Iowa City Press-Citizen’s high school Athletes of the Week for May 20-26. Press-Citizen.com readers vote to decide this week’s winners. Voting closes at 8 p.m. on Thursday.

Players are listed in alphabetical order by last name:

Girls

Rilyn Breinholt, Jr., Liberty

Rilyn Breinholt was an offensive force for the Lightning in regional competition this past week.

Breinholt scored in a 3-0 win over Burlington Notre Dame on May 22. She went on to add two more scores to her season total (19) in a 3-0 victory over Burlington on May 23. The win helped Liberty girls clinch a spot in the girls state soccer tournament for the first time in program history.

Molly Carlson, Soph., Iowa City High

Molly Carlson made her mark in a two-game softball series win over Iowa City West on May 22.

The second-year Little Hawk scored a total of four RBIs and three hits over the Trojans.

Alli Clark, Sr., Regina Catholic

Alli Clark put on an impressive performance in Regina softball’s 8-5 win over Mid-Prairie on May 23.

Clark notched two hits in four plate appearances for the Regals. She earned two runs and one RBI in the Regals’ season opener.

Maddyn Gates, Fresh., Solon

Solon softball is 3-1 to start the season and Maddyn Gates has helped lead the charge.

Gates has secured at least one hit during that stretch. She earned a total of four hits and one RBI in two-game series win over Mount Vernon on May 20. Gates went on to add three RBIs and two hits in two games against Independence on May 22. As of May 25, she's 2-0 as a pitcher for Solon.

Lizzie Pasbrig, Soph., Clear Creek Amana

Lizzie Pasbrig helped CCA softball earn its first two wins in a two-game series against Vinton-Shellsburg on May 20.

The second-year Clipper earned three hits and two RBIs in a 15-2 win over the Vikings. In the second game, Pasbrig added three RBIs and two hits to boost her season total.

Boys

Jackson Khamphilanouvong, Sr., Liberty

Jackson Khamphilanouvong helped Liberty defeat Muscatine, 9-1, on May 20.

The fourth-year player earned three hits in four plate appearances for the Lightning. He drove in three runs to help Liberty baseball earn its fourth win of the season.

Haider Nasr, Sr., Iowa City West

Iowa City West’s Haider Nasr (14) is one of the nominees for boys Athlete of the Week for May 20-26.

Haider Nasr was a major contributor to Iowa City West's 6-0 win over Dubuque Hempstead on May 22.

Nasr found the back of the net twice to help the Trojans advance to the boys state soccer tournament in Des Moines.

Trace Robertson, Jr., Clear Creek Amana

Trace Robertson made his presence felt during CCA baseball's 10-0 win over Mount Pleasant on May 22.

Robertson earned two hits in three at-bats for the Clippers. He drove in three runs to help CCA's scoring.

Dominic Salibi, Jr., Iowa City High

Dominic Salibi was a playmaker in Iowa City High's 7-3 win over Waterloo West's baseball team on May 22.

Salibi drove in a total of six runs against the Wahawks. He earned four hits and blasted two homers over the two-game stretch.

Quinn Warren, Sr., Regina Catholic

Quinn Warren has helped lead the Regals' offense all season, and that was evident in wins over Pella Christian and Mid-Prairie this past week.

The fourth-year Regal scored two goals in a 4-1 win over Pella Christian on May 20. He added another goal to his season total (16) against Mid-Prairie to help Regina reach the state soccer tournament for the second-straight year.
