Meet the members of the Daily News Girls Indoor Track & Field All-Star team for 2023-24

After combing over statistics and results, and with the guidance of local athletic directors and coaches, we at the Daily News selected All-Stars for boys and girls basketball, boys and girls hockey, boys and girls swimming, boys and girls track and field, gymnastics, skiing and wrestling.

Although the sports and skill sets may vary, there’s no denying that this group put up otherworldly numbers this winter while helping their respective teams find success – whether that be on the court, field, ice, mat or track, or in the gym or pool.

The Daily News presents its 2023-24 All-Stars for girls indoor track & field:

Kayla Bohlin, Wellesley

She ran second on the Raiders all-state champion 4x800-meter relay, which crossed first in 9 minutes, 27.74 seconds. The sophomore added a third-place finish in the 600 at the Meet of Champions (1:36.07). She was second in the Division 2 600 (1:38.3) and ran on the Raiders’ winning 4x4 (4:05.53) and 4x8 (9:45.41).

Alice Brambati, Hopkinton

The senior finished third in the long jump (17 feet, 5 inches) and 55-meter dash (8.75) at the Division 2 meet. Brambati also raced on the Hillers' fifth-place 4x200 relay. She competed in three events at the Meet of Champions.

She was a Tri-Valley League all-star and won the league title in the 55-meter dash. The senior was unbeaten in the 55 and shot put dung the regular season. She paced in three relays a the MSTCA Division 2 relay championships and was sixth in the 55 at the Division 2 championship meet (7.47) and eighth in the shot put (34-11.25). Canty qualified for three events at the Meet of Champions and New Balance Nationals in the 55.

She placed first in the long jump at the Meet of Champions, clearing 18 feet, 2.5 inches. Comella was also fourth in the 55 (7.14). That followed a Division 2 title in the 55, as Wellesley won its seventh straight team championship. The senior additionally placed second in the Division 2 300 and took second in the long jump.

Lily DeForge, Franklin

The Holy Cross signee placed second in the shot put at the MSTCA Boston Holiday Challenge, Division 1 state championships and the meet of championships. She qualified for the New England Championships (seventh) and New Balance Nationals (15th). Deforge won the shot put at the Hockomock League Championships and the MSTCA Coaches Invitational and the. The senior also placed in the top five in the weight throw at both the MSTCA Northeast invitational and Meet of Champions, qualifying for nationals. “This season Lily Deforge has emerged as one of the top throwers in the state,” Franklin coach Paul Trovato said. “Lily is a tough competitor. She has a desire to improve and works hard to achieve her goals.”

Averie Denelle, Tri-County

The senior won both the Division 5 state title and the Mayflower Athletic Conference championship in the high jump. Denelle then took 11th at the Meet of Champions and 12th at the Nike Indoor Nationals. She holds the Tri-County School records in the high jump at 5-foot-6 and the 55-meter hurdles (9.28 seconds). She was the Mayflower champion in the 55 hurdles and took ninth in Division 5. Denelle also placed 13th at the MSTCA pentathlon and was a Mayflower all-star. “Averie is an incredibly hard-working athlete who does not rest until she knows she gave it her all at a practice or meet. Her dedication to high jump and hurdling is admirable and we know that she has inspired others on the team to work harder,” Tri-County coach Benjamin Alden said.

The Holy Cross-bound Desmarais captured an all-state title in the 300 at the Meet of Champions in 39.99 seconds. The senior also won the 300 and 55 (7.03) at the Division 1 meet and was a Bay State league champion in the 300. Desmarais qualified for the 60, 200 and 400 at nationals, where she set a school record in the 60 (7.69 seconds) and helped the Flyers post record times in the spring medley relay (400 leg) and 4x400 relay. “She is the type of athlete you hope to get the opportunity to coach during a career, and we have been blessed and fortunate enough to have experienced the journey with her,” Framingham coach Chris Collins said. “She has influenced and inspired so many of our younger athletes with how she carries herself, and trains, yet finds the time to give and outreach, and inspire, the next generation of Flyers.”

A rare confidence: Determination propels Framingham sprinter Abby Desmarais to state championships

Add another All-American crown to her crowded trophy case. The senior was third at the New Balance Nationals in the Pentathlon. Dumas also placed third at the MSTCA Girls Indoor Individual Pentathlon and in the MIAA Meet of champions 55-meter hurdles (8.35 seconds). She won the 55 hurdles in every other meet she contested, including the Division 1 championships and Hockomock League championships. Add a Hockomock League high jump title, too. The Penn signee was the Hockomock MVP. “This season has been a continuation of the success that Sara has displayed in previous indoor track and field seasons. Sarah is a good ambassador of the sport,” Franklin coach Paul Trovato said. “Sarah holds herself to high standards.  When Sarah competes, she draws out the best from her competitors.”

Emmanuella Edozien, Natick

She set school records in her first season of indoor track. Edozien placed third in the 55-meter dash and fifth in the 55 hurdles at the Division 1 state meet. She was in the top 10 in both events at the Meet of Champions and took seventh in the 55 at New Englands. Edizoen won the Bay State Conference 55 hurdles and took second in the 55 dash. The sophomore's hurdles personal record of 8.4 seconds set a school record, and she cleared 17 feet, 5 inches in the long jump to set Natick’s best indoor mark. “Watching Emmi have such a breakout season has been amazing.  She has been fearless in trying many new events this season, all of which have worked out to be successful.  I cannot wait to see what the future holds for Emmi as she continues to build off this incredible season,” Natick coach Victoria Zamarra-Dixon said.

She captured three silver medals at the Division 4 state championships, as the Panthers claimed the team title. Kuchman was second in the 1,000 (2:58.8) and the two-mile (11:19.15) and ran on Holliston's second-place 4x800 relay (10:01.84). She also placed seventh in the mile at the Meet of Champions (5:05.89).

Olivia LaBelle, Algonquin

She won the Division 2 title in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.39 seconds and helped the Titans capture the 4x200-meter relay championship at the same meet. LaBelle competed in both  events at the Meet of Champions, where the senior was sixth in the 55 hurdles (8.55) and helped Algonquin to a silver in the 4x2 (1:46.00).

Sasha Lamakina, Framingham

She captured the Division 1 state title in the 600 (1:36.34) and placed second at the Meet of Champions in a school-record 1:35.43. Lamakina qualified for nationals in the 400 and 800, where the sophomore also participated in Framingham’s school record-setting relays: the sprint medley and 4x400. “Sasha had an unbelievable year as only a sophomore. Next year will be one full of challenges, as she will lead the next generation of runners,” Flyers coach Chris Collins said. “A lot of pressure, but Sasha is one of those rare athletes who gets excited and thrives to challenges. You don’t see panic in her demeanor ever, only excitement in her eyes as the pressure rises.”

'Nice to win something big': Eli Merritt, Framingham sisters win BAA races before Boston Marathon

Julia Lenfest, Nimpuc

She placed sixth at the MSTCA Speed Classic in the 55 hurdles and was third in the same event at the District E Division 1 championships (9.34). Lenfest was a DVC all-star in the hurdles and helped capture a league title in the 4x200-meter relay. The junior qualified for the Division 5 championships.

Carmen Luisi, Hopkinton

The former cross-country state champion added two more golds this winter. She took first in the Division 4 1,000 (2:53.25) and mile (5:11.64). Holliston also won the team state championship. The Syracuse-bound Luisi ran on the Panthers' fourth-place 4x4, as well.

Gabrielle Pierre, Lincoln-Sudbury

The junior set school records in both the long jump and triple jump this winter, both if which set the top marks in the state. Her 19-foot, 2.25-inch long jump as the seventh best by a Massachusetts girl in the past 25 years, less than a foot off the state record. The junior was fifth in the Milrose games with a triple jump of 39-5.75, which was the fourth best by a girl from MA this century. Pierre won the Division 1 long jump title and was second at the Meet of Champions. “Gabby has continued to elevate herself into the highest echelon of MA jumpers the state has ever seen. Beneath her joyful and easy going nature is someone incredibly driven and resilient. Her ability to execute and adjust under pressure is a testament to her competitive nature and acute athletic ability. Watching her compete is about as fun as it gets,” L-S coach Sean Duncan said.

Emily Richardson, Framingham

She captured the Division 1 title in the shot put after winning the Bay State League title in the same event. Richardson qualified for nationals in the shot put and cleared 4-feet, 7 inches in the high jump. The senior is also an accomplished diver committed to Bryant. “Emily is nothing short of amazing. In her first-ever season of indoor track, she shattered our school record,” Framingham coach Chris Collins said. “Emily is one of the nicest, most giving people you will ever meet. She is a huge inspirational leader for our team, and goes out of her way to help and to mentor our underclassmen. Not knowing what lies in her future I can only hope for the sake of others that she can find time to coach, as she will be amazing at it.”
