Meet James Corden's Late-Night Replacement

Taylor Tomlinson

The late-night TV landscape is about to change in a big way with the exciting addition of After Midnight, a new show hosted by stand-up comedian Taylor Tomlinson.

Stephen Colbert announced the upcoming CBS series during The Late Show on Wednesday, Nov. 1. "Please welcome the newest late-night host, Taylor Tomlinson!" he said after a playful back-and-forth with the 29-year-old stand-up. Her show will take over the 12:37 a.m. ET time slot previously held by The Late Late Show with James Corden.

Let's take a closer look at Taylor Tomlinson, who's set to make history as the only woman hosting a major network late-night show, and her career.

Who is taking over James Corden's late-show slot?

Stand-up comedian Taylor Tomlinson will soon be the only woman hosting a late-night television series when she takes the helm of the new CBS series After Midnight, which will air following The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

The show, which will premiere early next year, was inspired by the internet-themed game show @Midnight that aired after The Colbert Report from 2013 to 2017. The new program will fill the 12:37 a.m. ET time slot vacated by James Corden when The Late Late Show ended in April.

Tomlinson joined Colbert, who will produce the show, on Nov. 1 to discuss her new project. "I've never had a real job. I've been doing stand-up since I was 16, which is not a job," she told Colbert. "No job! ...So like this has been a really fun couple of months, like, I was on TikTok searching, like, 'How to nail a job interview'—TikTok is Google for children—and, like, 'How do you impress your maybe boss?'"

To potential detractors who think she might be too young to helm her own show, she said, "I'm 29, so if you don't know who I am, don't worry. I barely know myself."

She finished up  by saying her 30th birthday is on Saturday. "Happy birthday," Colbert replied. "I got you a network show."

Is Taylor Tomlinson related to Lily Tomlin?

Taylor Tomlinson is not related to acclaimed comedic actress Lily Tomlin, they just share a similar last name. That said, Tomlinson did once interview Tomlin, along with Jane Fonda, for the 2022 "Netflix Is a Joke" series.

Tomlinson ended the interview by asking, “And finally, the most important question, do you like me? Like, have these questions earned your respect at all or even a little?"

To which Lily responded, "Well, now that I met you via virtual TV, I will be looking forward to watching your specials. My feeling is that you have a 10-special deal with Netflix and that really rubs me the wrong way. I never had a special with Netflix."

While not related, Tomlinson has named Tomlin as one of her biggest comedy inspirations—and like her idol, she's about to help pave the way for women in comedy as the only female late-night host on network TV.
