New MCCC class explores health care issues, trends

MONROE — Monroe County Community College is offering the new Issues and Trends in Health Care course (HLTSC 200) course. The health sciences class is open to MCCC students and anyone interested in the topic.

"The course is intended is to develop an awareness of the current trends and issues in health care," MCCC said in a news release. "Students will examine how legal, ethical, political and economic principles affect the health care professional and his/her ability to deliver high-quality patient care. Students will also explore the concepts of health, wellness and illness as they apply to the changing population. Contemporary issues -- including social justice, advancements in technology, the COVID-19 pandemic, inter-professional collaboration and changes in the healthcare environment — will also be discussed.

“We highly recommend this course, along with Introduction to Healthcare Professions (HLTSC 115), for those students who are interested in a career in healthcare, but have not made the decision which field to pursue, be it nursing, respiratory therapy or another field,” said Dr. Kimberly Lindquist, dean of Health Sciences at MCCC. “For many students who are currently or planning to enroll in their initial general education courses, these two courses provide a very solid exploration of the many opportunities and diverse specialty areas in healthcare.”

Introduction to Healthcare Professions (HLTSC 115) is intended to develop an increased awareness of multiple healthcare professions. Students will examine the principles of providing quality healthcare, including ethics, patient-centered care, communication, informatics, patient safety and quality improvement in healthcare, MCCC said. Students will complete a Basic Certificate in Quality and Safety through the Institute for Health Care Improvement.

“All three of the nursing programs offered at MCCC and our Respiratory Therapy program are nationally accredited and/or state-approved and continue to be recognized nationally and statewide as top programs with the highest certification exam rates and job placements after graduation,” said Lindquist.
