Muleshoe Foundation hosting fundraiser

The Muleshoe Heritage Foundation welcomes the public to Boot Scootin' in the 'Shoe, on Thursday, July 20, at 6 pm. This is a fundraiser benefiting the Muleshoe Heritage Center.

BBQ, dancing and music by Jake Hooker and the Outsiders, is on the schedule for the evening. Tickets for a 50/50 raffle will also be available. The drawing will be that evening.

The Muleshoe Heritage Center offers visitors the opportunity to visit early day West Texas buildings including the Janes Ranch House, the Figure 4 Ranch House, a log cabin, the Muleshoe Ranch Cook House and Bunkhouse, the Virginia City Hotel and the original Muleshoe Santa Fe Depot.

Every tea lover's favorite day of the year is back. McAlister’s Deli is celebrating its 15th annual Free Tea Day by offering customers a free 32-ounce cup of their Famous Tea on Thursday, July 20.

Honor Flight golf tournament registration open

Registration is now open for the annual Texas South Plains Honor Flight Golf Tournament sponsored by Texas Mutual Insurance and United Supermarkets, which will be held Monday, July 31 at the LakeRidge Country Club Golf Course, 8802 Vicksburg Ave., Lubbock.

The tournament will be a four-player scramble format with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Entry fee is $600 per team and includes burritos, coffee and donuts for breakfast, and a burger bar with chips and drinks for lunch. Hole sponsorships are available for $300. A combo package including a four-player team and a hole sponsorship is available at a discounted price of $800.

A bag of donated gifts, snacks and coupons for free golf merchandise will be given to all players. As part of the event, a $10,000 cash prize will be paid for any and all holes-in-one on the par 3 seventh hole. All holes-in-one on the other three par 3 holes will be awarded great prizes also.

There will be a $500 gift certificate to the LakeRidge Pro Shop awarded to each of the winning teams in each of the three flights in the tournament.

In addition, golfers and others in attendance will be able to buy raffle tickets for great prizes, including the Grand Prize of a weekend getaway to Dallas for a round of golf at the Cowboy Club in Grapevine, two-night hotel stay, a gift card for a great dinner and four tickets to a Texas Rangers baseball game.

All proceeds from the tournament will help defray the cost of the 2023 10th annual all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for 100 area military veterans. Honor Flight volunteers will be working to raise more than $250,000 needed to make this our greatest trip ever.

Youths encouraged to attend ‘Explore the Arts’ camp in July at SPC

LEVELLAND – Area youngsters ages 5 to 17 are welcome to participate in South Plains College’s “Explore the Arts" camp July 24-27 in the Fine Arts building. The cost is $90.

The four-day camp will feature rotating classes from 9 a.m. to noon for participants. Students ages 5-11 will attend theater, visual art, music and photography. Participants ages 12-17 can create their own camp schedule by registering for the specific classes they wish to attend.

Pre-registration under way for Vamos a Pescar

Pre-registration is now available for the annual Vamos a Pescar, Let's Go Fishing event set for 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5.

Those who pre-register can check in as early as 5 a.m. the day of the event.

The event is free, does not require a fishing license, no registration fee, and no cost for lunch.

Pre-registration is urged so that organizers can ensure enough food and supplies for everyone.

CASA is beneficiary of annual golf tournament

CASA of the South Plains is partnering with Flatland Freight for its 4th annual Flatlander Golf Tournament scheduled for Aug. 18-20 at The Rawls Course at Texas Tech.

The Flatlander is a two-man partnership with a format not found anywhere else in the Hub City. It is three days packed with intense bracket match-play golf. The first tee off will be at 7:30 a.m., with breakfast and lunch provided each day.

Proceeds from the event will go directly to providing support for children in the South Plains who have been removed from their homes because of abuse or neglect and are now in foster care. Today there are more than 500 children in our community that need the gift of a CASA volunteer.

Lubbock NAACP hosting scholarship dinner

On Aug. 26, the Lubbock NAACP will be hosting its annual scholarship dinner. The evening will be a re-affirmation of our belief that Diversity is Instrumental.

The event will be held at the Frazier Alumni Pavilion, 2680 Drive of Champions, on Texas Tech campus. The reception will begin at 6 p.m., and dinner will be served at 7 p.m.

City Councilwoman Shelia Patterson Harris and KLBK’s Matt Stell will be co-hosting the event. Author and tenured professor at Texas Tech, Dr. Bryan K. Hotchkins, will be providing the evening’s keynote address.

The evening will also include live music by local artists, Daron Mann & Company and Naomi Taylor, an awards ceremony and a silent auction.

SPC seeks nominations for 2023 Distinguished Alumni

LEVELLAND – The South Plains College Office of Development and Alumni Relations is now accepting applications for the 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award! Honorees will be recognized as part of the annual Scholarship Banquet on Nov. 2.

Recipients are former students of SPC who have made noteworthy accomplishments in their professional careers and in their communities. The award has been presented to former students in various professions including medicine, professional sports, education, welding and philanthropy. Recent recipients include Derrell Edwards (NASCAR), John Duff (National Sorghum Producers), Sgt. Joshua Bartlett (Lubbock Sherriff’s Office), Kevin Dane (Google) and Stephanie Lynn Smith (SPC).

Nominees must demonstrate how South Plains College was a legitimate part of their educational experiences. A nominee must have worked at least 10 years in their chosen profession or have made significant contributions in their career if less than 10 years.

Nominations for the 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award are not only welcomed but encouraged from community members, and the nomination form can be picked up at the SPC Development and Alumni Relations Office or at www.southplainscollege.edu/alumni-giving/alumni-friends/nominationforms.php.
