Maze Runner gets unexpected reboot

It may be the era of remakes and reboots, but few could have foreseen that The Maze Runner would be getting such treatment.

Despite the final entry of the film series, The Death Cure, only being released in 2018, The Hollywood Reporter has reported that 20th Century Studios has decided to reboot the franchise, which spanned three films.

As per the article, the reboot is not intended to be a redo of the story nor a direct sequel to the original trilogy, with the hope being to produce a "continuation of the story yet also return to the elements that made the first movie connect with its audience".

Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Lee Stollman and Marty Bowen will return to produce the reboot, with original series director Wes Ball also serving as a producer. There's currently no information on potential cast members or directors.

The Maze Runner films, which were based on James Dashner's books, followed a group of teenagers as they attempted to escape from an intricate maze-like battleground, with later developments revealing a dystopian world run by corrupt government and corporations.

The film series starred Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Will Poulter, Ki Hong Lee, Dexter Darden and Thomas Brodie-Sangster, with the group reuniting in 2020 during lockdown amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Scodelario, who has since starred in Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City and The Gentlemen, used the opportunity to make a joke about the final film in the trilogy, saying: "We survived the Glade, the Scorch and whatever the third one was about. We got this."

Ball, who directed all three instalments of the trilogy, has since moved onto another franchise, with the filmmaker helming the latest entry in the Apes franchise, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
