Mayor Adams pokes fun at Bill de Blasio’s Spanish

Even though he’s out of office, Bill de Blasio can’t escape being ridiculed for his español.

Mayor Adams poked fun at his predecessor’s way of speaking Spanish on Wednesday, claiming he “butchers” the Latin language whenever he tries to use it.

“I don’t want to do the de Blasio version that butchers the Spanish. I want to give it the respect that it deserves,” Adams told reporters with a grin during a press conference at City Hall.

Adams’ good-natured dig at de Blasio came unprompted after he was asked if he plans to use Spanish more at press conferences, which de Blasio was known to often do.

“Mi casa es su casa — yes, I do. I love the Spanish language,” Adams said. “A lot of my staff are Spanish speakers ... They teach me the phrases over and over again.”

De Blasio, who left office Jan. 1 after eight years at the helm of the city government, did not return a request for comment after Adams’ swipe at his Spanish.

During his time in City Hall, de Blasio was known for capping off his press conferences with a brief summary in Spanish on the topic of the day.

Having become conversational in Spanish while studying Latin American politics at Columbia University in the 1980s, de Blasio kept up the press conference tradition throughout both his mayoral terms.

At a 2014 press conference, though, he admitted his Spanish chops weren’t what they used to be.

“It was much stronger many years ago, so I’m going to do a lot of work over time,” he said at the time. “But I’m trying my best.”
