Max Scherzer was removed from today’s intrasquad game with an injury issue, per MLB Network insider Jon Heyman.

The New York Mets ace has reportedly tweaked his hamstring. The severity of the injury remains unknown.

The MLB world took to Twitter to react to this unfortunate news just before the start of the 2022 season.

“Not the news Mets fans needed to hear this morning,” one fan wrote.

“I thought it would be a month or two till the next bad break for the Mets. Haven’t the people been through enough,” another added.

For the Mets, this bad news piles onto some other tough news from less than 24 hours ago. On Friday morning, Scherzer’s star pitching partner Jacob deGrom underwent an MRI after he felt tightness in his throwing shoulder.

The Mets added Scherzer to their bullpen with a massive three-year, $130 million contract earlier this offseason.

Scherzer and deGrom — who boast five combined Cy Young awards — were supposed to enter the 2022 season as a powerful one-two punch for the Mets. Now, each of their statuses are in question as we approach Opening Day.

New York will begin its 2022 campaign with a series against Scherzer’s former Washington Nationals team on April 7.
