UFC Fight Night results: Max Holloway ends Arnold Allen’s long win streak with points victory

Max Holloway halted Arnold Allen’s 12-fight win streak on Saturday, outpointing the Briton in the pair’s UFC Fight Night main event.

Former featherweight champion Holloway bounced back from his third loss to Alexander Volkanovski by beating Allen in Kansas City, where he was a unanimous-decision winner.

Meanwhile, Allen came up short as he looked to set up a title shot against reigning champion Volkanovski, landing numerous heavy strikes but failing to put down Hawaiian Holloway.

In fact, it was Allen who dropped to a knee in the frenzied final seconds of the fight, which Holloway won 49-46, 49-46, 48-47 on the scorecards.

Final round! Allen likely needs a finish here. He’s had his moments, but Holloway has often beaten him to the punch.

Allen comes out fast, landing two heavy hooks. Another two left hooks connect. He’s been told he needs a finish by his corner, surely.

Allen is putting everything into his punches.

The featherweights grapple briefly, with Allen forcing the Hawaiian to the fence. They’re not there for long, though. Holloway times a step-in elbow nicely. Now a left hook. He eats a hard head kick – I’m not sure how.

Now a vicious left hook lands for Allen, but again Holloway seems unfazed! A head kick is just off target for Allen.

Allen times a leg kick as Holloway throws one to the body, and Holloway trips to the mat. He’s right back up, though.

Allen holds Holloway against the fence now. He knocks out Holloway’s mouthguard with a shoulder, but the referee puts it back in.

The pair separate in the final seconds, in which both land punches in a frenzied exchange! Allen takes a knee!

Into the final two rounds. Allen has never been this deep into a pro fight.

The Briton swings a kick into Holloway’s left calf. Now he kicks high, but his attempt comes up short.

A grazing left hook lands for Holloway, who then unfurls two hooks into the body of Allen. Still the Ipswich fighter is undeterred.

A loud “Holloway” chant begins. The Hawaiian blocks a head kick, then digs a cross into the midriff of Allen.

Allen catches a kick and drives Holloway back to the fence, where he lands a decent head kick.

Holloway sneaks in a right hook, then pops back Allen’s head with two quick shots. Allen looks frustrated now as he hunts the former champion.

A bit of success here for Allen, though, as he connects with a few punches in quick succession.

Holloway with yet another fine body kick. Allen replies with a spinning back kick to the body.

Solid leg kick by Holloway. He’s fighting on the back foot for the time being.

Holloway grazes Allen with a cross then is nearly caught himself.

Harsh body kick by Holloway, who then tries a step-in elbow. Another brutal body kick. Now a spinning back elbow, which Allen blocks.

That, like Round 1, was a good round for Holloway. Round 2 was close, but it might just have been Allen’s.

Both men trade a number of jabs, switching targets between the head and body.

Holloway comes forward with a classic blitz. Allen’s face is reddened. He connects with a decent overhand left, though.

Holloway appears to be bleeding from around his left eye.

It’s now the Hawaiian who holds the centre of the ring. He sees another head kick blocked, then eats a cross.

Another Allen cross – this one to the chest – sends Holloway stumbling backwards.

Allen slowly stalks Holloway then lands a brutal left cross, after lulling Holloway into a false sense of security.

Holloway slams a low kick into the right calf of Allen. Now a clean punch to the head of Allen, who keeps pressing forward.

Both men stand southpaw. Allen with a couple of leg kicks early on. He lands the first and misses the second.

Another leg kick seems to land for Allen, but Holloway claims it was a groin strike. The action is briefly paused.

Back under way. Holloway fires off a flurry of punches. He blocks a head kick, then sees one of his own blocked.

Lots of chants for Holloway, who is clipped with a left hook. He blocks another head kick, and throws an oblique kick. Now a jab to the body of Allen.

Another flurry from Holloway, who punches high then to the body. Lots of pressure from Allen nevertheless. The Briton blocks a cross.

Again Holloway lands a combination of punches upstairs, and Allen is put off balance. Allen with a decent left cross now. Holloway misses a spinning back kick to the body. He then lands a hard roundhouse kick to the body, though.

Good round for Holloway.

Allen told The Independent and other outlets in February: “I really enjoyed that streak [Holloway] went on, taking out all the top contenders. That 13-fight streak he went on is one of the better streaks there’s been in the UFC. That was pretty incredible.”

Also: “If we’re talking straight boxing, I think [I’m better]. MMA is a different sport, and it doesn’t really translate, but yeah, I think so. I’m not gonna stand there and go blow for blow; I’m gonna move out the way, make you miss, and make you pay. I think Calvin landed a crazy amount of shots on him in that [2021] fight as well. They both sort of just obliged each other, stood in each other’s punching range; I ain’t doing that!”

When asked about Holloway’s chin, he said: “It’s definitely a factor. It’s not like football, where you can play week-in, week-out, and if you lose 10 games in a row you take no damage. Your body gets damaged, your brain gets hurt, everything takes impact. You’re more susceptible to cuts, scar tissue, and all that stuff.

“One thing a coach of mine said to me before was... it was more for young guys in the gym, taking shots by being silly, putting their hands down and stuff, but he said: ‘If someone told you there was a total number of shots you could take until your chin was gone, every shot would count.’ If someone said, ‘You’ve got 100 shots until your chin goes,’ you’d respect every shot. The thing is: That is a reality, we just don’t know the number. Everyone’s different.”

Allen will hope that Holloway’s number is up.

Algeo tags Brown with a knee as the latter shoots for a takedown, but Brown eats it well.

He’s able to get Algeo to the fence, where he takes the back. Algeo fights out of that position, but he receives some winging punches from Brown.

Another knockdown for Algeo, though! He catches Brown off guard with a beautiful left elbow!

Algeo is straight into side control, securing a crucifix posiiton and firing off punches!

Brown is able to escape, but he’s caught in a rear naked choke! He survives for as long as he can, but he eventually taps! It’s all over!

An awkward grappling exchange ensues, with Algeo trying to isolate Brown’s arm from side control, before Brown fights into a variation on side control and attempts the same.

No joy for Brown there, and the fighters soon stand. A firefight follows, with Brown landing the harder punches!

He’s dropped again, however, by a well-timed cross! He jumps back to his feet.

Algeo’s face is busted up, his nose leaking blood, but he shows some nice versatility in striking offence late in the round.

Fine start by Algeo, who is switching stances frequently to keep Brown guessing.

Brown is landing in the pocket, but Algeo is connecting with the cleaner shots.

A counter right hook secures a knockdown for Algeo, but Brown shoots straight bacck to his feet and lands two uppercuts in the clinch!

Algeo then takes down Brown against the fence.

“Let’s go, Brandon,” is the chant from the Kansas City crowd as the American presses forward on Brazilian Nicolau.

Lots of feints from southpaw Royval, ranked fourth at flyweight, early on. Nicolau, ranked fifth, circles away.

Nicolau appears to land a left hook, but as he crouches he eats a perfect knee that puts him down!!

Royval overwhelms him with ground and pound in full guard, elbows aplenty, and the referee waves it off!!

Herman vs Cummings – Round 3

Yet again, Herman is dropped by a left hand. Cummings decides not to follow his opponent to the mat, instead kicking at his legs, while Herman kicks up at him.

Cummings eventually chooses to let Herman stand. Clean jab by Cummings, then a left hook to the body. Now a harsh body kick, before he drops Herman for approximately the sixth time with a clean punch.

Herman stands and snorts out blood. Cummings goes orthodox, then switches back to southpaw as the crowd chants “Zak”, and it’s the end of the end for Herman (the beginning of the end was in Round 1, in all honesty).

Cumming lands more left hands, eventually snapping back Herman’s head against the cage, before Herman falls to the mat; the fight is waved off!

Cummings is granted time to recover, while Herman is docked a point.

Now the action resumes. Herman is swinging for the fences, favouring his right hook. Still, it’s Cummings with the cleaner shots, and he has Herman stumbling late in the round.

Herman vs Cummings – Round 2

Immediately Cummings tags Herman with a left hook, as his opponent closes range.

Herman holds the hometown fighter, but Cummings presses him back to the fence. The pair separate and move into space, and again Cummings drops Herman with a money left hand!

Herman stands and seems to be going for broke now, plodding forward and loading up on his punches. He has cut Cummings around the local’s left eye, though it might have been from a clash of heads.

Cummings grapples his fellow American against the fence, before the light-heavyweights again separate. Herman gets Cummings’ atttention with a stinging right hand, but he’s almost immediately dropped by a left – no surprise there.

He is quickly back to his feet and trading punches with Cummings, each man landing clean. Before long, Cummings drops Herman with a left hook for about the fourth time in this fight, and he looks to follow up with ground and pound from full guard.

Decent elbows from Cummings, before he’s smashed with an up-kick again! That’s the second time in this fight, another foul by Herman.

Southpaw Cummings with a decent left hook early on, then another that puts down Herman! The crowd erupts!

Cummings lands some ground and pound before opting to let Herman stand. Cummings soon takes down Herman, however, before suffering an up-kick while kneeling. The referee thus pauses the action briefly due to the illegal strike.

We’re back under way. Teep kick to the body by Cummings, then a straight left hand. Now another.

The crowd is singing now. Right hand lands for Cummings, who is very much on top at the moment. Herman connects with a solid right hook, before Cummings fires back with a hard body kick. Brutal body hook by Cummings now.
