The Dallas Mavericks are on the brink of something special. To get there though, they’ll need to capitalize on what’s shaping up to be a wild free-agency period.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Mavs are in pursuit of veteran point guard Kyle Lowry. Lowry, 35, will soon be an unrestricted free agent.

The former All-Star is still playing at a high level and is bound to garner plenty of interest this offseason. He scored 17.2 points and dished out 7.3 assists per game this past season.

Lowry would fill a major need for the Mavs, who need a primary ball distributer to allow Luka Doncic to play off-ball more often. The former Toronto Raptors guard will be pursued by Dallas, per Stein.

Kyle Lowry’s age is obviously a concern. He’ll turn 36 during the upcoming season. But he still plays at a high level, he’s a proven leader and is a menace on the defensive end.

The Mavericks are on the brink of becoming a true championship contender. There’s no time to waste here. Dallas needs to go all-in in the free-agent market.

Lowry won’t be easy to acquire. The Raptors are still in play to re-sign the former All-Star. Teams like the New York Knicks, Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers could also be in the mix.

Regardless, if the Mavericks want to take advantage of Doncic – who seems to only be getting better – pursuing Lowry is an obligation at this point.
