How did Matty Healy become famous?

Born April 8, 1989, Healy is somewhat of a nepo baby: The son of U.K. TV personality and actress Denise Welch and actor Tim Healy, his parents are famous and successful in their stage and screen careers, but he pursued music over being a TV personality or actor. His parents are friends with some legendary musicians, including Ringo Starr, AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson (who's Matty's godfather), Jeff Lynne of Electric Light Orchestra (and the best Traveling Wilbury) and Joy Division and New Order bassist Peter Hook. As a result, his pursuit of music likely had a leg up thanks to his connections, and he knew he wanted to be a musician since he was 12 years old.

Another advantage Healy had growing up with dreams of being a pop star was, obviously, financial: Like Swift, Healy's wealthy parents were able to financially invest in his talent from a young age. In this case, they didn't buy shares in his record label, but were able to get Healy pricey private school education to study music before dropping out.

While in school, he joined schoolmates Ross MacDonald and Adam Hann's band in 2002 as a drummer, then as a vocalist when George Daniel got behind the kit. That band became The 1975, and they were initially rejected from every major label, leading their manager to launch indie label Dirty Hit. They released four EPs before their full-length self-titled debut album in 2013, which was propelled by hit singles "Chocolate," "Sex," "Settle Down" and "Girls."

What is Matty Healy's net worth in 2024?

Matty Healy's net worth in 2024 is estimated at a cool $15 million. He's successful enough to turn down projects and gigs that don't mesh with his artistic vision, including a supporting slot on tour with Ed Sheeran.

"I tend to say no to stuff for money. I don't know how you can write this up without it being rude or inappropriate, but I just got offered a four-month tour next year of stadiums with the biggest singer-songwriter in the world that would've made me money that I've never even seen or heard of in my life," he told The New York Times, confirming that it was the ginger crooner. "Think about the money you think I'm getting offered—it's not just offered, it's what he can afford because of what he makes for shows—and then just triple it. It's insane."

He added, "Not because I don't like Ed Sheeran. I think he's, in a lot of ways, a genius, and he does what he does better than anybody else. But opening up for somebody and not just being real, that's the kind of stuff I think about."
