Matty Healy Finally Breaks Silence on Taylor Swift's Album

Matty Healy and Taylor Swift

While much of the world has spent the last several days absorbing as much of Taylor Swift’s latest album as possible, Matty Healy said he has not been as focused as others on listening to the pop star’s new material.

Fans have widely speculated about which of Swift’s past love interests inspired The Tortured Poets Department, even before its official release on April 19. Once the surprise double album dropped, many Swifties became convinced that its title track, and perhaps others included in the 31-song collection, are about Swift’s earlier romance with The 1975 frontman.

Healy’s aunt responded relatively quickly to speculation that her nephew inspired some of Swift’s new material. But Healy hadn’t reacted publicly himself until he was approached by a TMZ reporter while walking along a street in Los Angeles on Wednesday, April 24.

When the reporter asked Healy what he thought of Swift’s new “diss track,” the British singer/songwriter chuckled.

“I haven’t really listened to that much of it,” Healy said, quickly adding, “But I’m sure it’s good.”

Healy, 35, and Swift, 34, dated briefly in 2023 after the “Cruel Summer” singer ended her years-long relationship with English actor Joe Alwyn and before she began dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. Swift and Healy previously had what the “Love It If We Made It” singer described as a “flirtation” back in 2015.

The Tortured Poets Department arrived last week as Swift’s 11th studio album. The megastar revealed the new project in early February while accepting an award onstage at the 2024 Grammy Awards. Her announcement sparked weeks of fan speculation regarding who and what may have inspired her latest collection of lyrics.

In addition to Healy and Alwyn, some listeners now believe that Kim Kardashian also possibly inspired two of Swift’s new songs: “thanK you aIMee” and “Cassandra.” The reality TV star lost more than 100,000 followers on social media in the days since the album’s release as Swifties criticized Kardashian in online posts, according to TMZ.
