Matthew McConaughey might say ’alright’ to being governor of Texas

Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey would consider throwing his hat in the race should his home state of Texas be looking for a new governor.

The “Dallas Buyers Club” star, who resides in Austin, called politics a “broken business” that he would consider getting involved in if the stars aligned.

“I don’t know. I mean, that wouldn’t be up to me. It would be up to the people more than it would me,” he told podcast host Hugh Hewitt when asked about running the Lone Star State. “When politics redefines its purpose, I could be a hell of a lot more interested.”

Performers including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ronald Reagan and Jesse Ventura have been elected to their state’s governor’s mansions. Before becoming president, Donald Trump was a reality TV star.

McConaughey, 51, said he’s not sure that the political arena is the best place to accomplish things that are important to him, but didn’t rule it out. It’s also not clear which party he’d represent, if any, but expressed concern that “no matter what side of the aisle you’re on,” it’s a problem that the nation’s “social contracts” have broken down.

“This country has got to stabilize first before we start to say ‘okay here’s how we’re marching out of this forward,’” he said.

According to the “Dazed and Confused” actor, that starts with individuals thinking about how they fit into the bigger picture.

“We don’t trust each other, and that leads to us not trusting ourselves,” he said. “If that becomes an epidemic, then we’ve got anarchy.”

Texas governor Greg Abbott is likely to seek a third term in 2022.
