Former Oklahoma Sooners leader Lincoln Riley has re-energized the USC football program as the Trojans’ new head coach heading into the 2022 season.

USC legend Matt Leinart, who visited Southern California for Friday’s spring practice, is thrilled by the outlook of the program moving forward.

“Stopped by @USC_FB practice today. There’s a new energy and buzz around this staff and around these players. Exited to see the development this year!” Leinart wrote on Twitter.

After Riley announced his decision to take the Trojans’ head coaching job, the high-caliber transfers quickly began to funnel in.

Three former Sooners followed their coach to LA: five-star quarterback Caleb Williams, four-star wide receiver Mario Williams and four-star cornerback Latrell McCutchin. Riley also helped land four-star Oregon running back Travis Dye and four-star Colorado wide receiver Brendan Rice (son of NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice).

Leinart, who starred at QB from 2003-05, hopes Caleb Williams will be the next in a long line of great USC quarterbacks.

“There’s been a long history of great Qb’s to wear the Cardinal and Gold. Can’t wait for you to establish your legacy! Welcome to @USC_FB,” he tweeted after Williams’ transfer decision in February.

Riley and his USC program will kick off their 2022 season with a matchup against Rice on September 3.
