‘Matilda the Musical,’ ‘Treason’ & More Top Entertainment Picks for the Week of January 4, 2023

The New Year brings new streaming options. But with so many services to choose from, it’s hard to determine which titles should be watched (and which ones should be avoided). Luckily, we had five editors highlight the best entertainment picks of the week, ranging from a nostalgic musical to an underrated rom-com.

Keep scrolling for PureWow’s entertainment picks for the week of January 4, 2023.

PureWow Pick for Best Classic Remake: Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical

From the catchy musical numbers (“We are revolting children, living in revolting times!”) to Alisha Weir’s delightful charm, this remake truly captures the spirit of the 1996 classic (and subsequent Broadway production). The film does a phenomenal job of tackling heavier themes with a fun, bold and whimsical tone. And of course, we must mention Emma Thompson, who is genuinely terrifying as the school’s headmistress, Miss Trunchbull… — Nakeisha Campbell, PureWow’s Associate Editor of Entertainment & News

PureWow Pick for Best New British Thriller: Treason

Though there hasn’t been much buzz surrounding it, Treason jumped into our streaming queue after we spotted it on Netflix’s top ten most-watched shows list. The British thriller gives us suspense, spies and a whole lot of accents. And since it’s a limited series, its five episodes make it easily bingeable. If you liked The Bodyguard (the British series starring Richard Madden not the epic film starring Whitney Houston), you’ll definitely love this. — Philip Mutz, PureWow’s VP of News & Entertainment

PureWow Pick for Most Underrated Rom-Com: The People We Hate at the Wedding

This Prime Video movie has an all-star cast, including Kristen Bell, Ben Platt and Allison Janney. While it premiered back in November, it didn’t get the attention it deserved because it was overshadowed by the holidays. The slightly predictable film is based on the best-selling book by Grant Ginder, following a dysfunctional family who reunite at a wedding. You’ll laugh far more than your average Hallmark rom-com, and the on-screen dynamic between Bell and Platt deserves an encore. — Greta Heggeness, PureWow’s Senior Editor of News & Entertainment

PureWow Pick for Best Netflix Binge: Holy Family

If you're looking for a new telenovela-like drama to binge on Netflix, look no further than Holy Family (which *thankfully* has already been renewed for a second season). Courtesy of creator Manolo Caro (The House of Flowers, Someone Has to Die), this juicy Spanish-language series is like Desperate Housewives meets You. Basically, Holy Family follows a group of mothers living in Madrid who each face their own struggles while trying to care for their families. However, one mom in particular seems to be fostering loads of dark secrets, including a mysterious child locked in her basement and a twisted past that she is trying to forget...and her story only gets wilder throughout these eight episodes. With mystery, romance, drama and action, this is a show that will keep you guessing until you get to the explosive finale. — Joel Calfee, PureWow’s Assistant Editor of News & Entertainment

PureWow Pick for Most Highly-Anticipated Teen Drama Return: Outer Banks Season 3

Calling all the Pogues! Netflix has just confirmed the official premiere date for the highly-anticipated Outer Banks season 3. We are happy to report that our fav treasure hunting crew is gearing up to return on—drumroll, please—February 23. The streaming platform also decided to treat us to a short teaser video, which consisted of never-before-seen photos from the new season. (And we can’t be the only ones who caught that cute moment between JJ and Kiara in that teaser?!! Ahhhhhh.) One ticket to Poguelandia, please? Time to revisit seasons one and two this week. — Karelle McKay, PureWow’s Assistant Editor of News & Entertainment
