Netflix confirms Matilda the Musical UK release

Netflix UK has finally announced a release date for the long-awaited Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical.

Fans have been waiting a 'revolting' amount of time (sorry), for the movie to drop, especially when it was expected to premiere in December alongside its release elsewhere.

It will be available to stream from Sunday, June 25, 2023.

The reason for the UK and Ireland delay compared to other territories was due to the theatrical release of the movie, meaning Netflix had to wait a bit longer before being able to stream it.

Fans were very upset about it and took to creator Tim Minchin to vent their feelings.

In turn, the comedian responded by clarifying the situation. In a series of tweets, he said that he was sorry for the delay, but it wasn't up to him.

He also noted that "as filmmakers, we would prefer audiences to see the film in a cinema."

He explained: "The large format and excellent sound do justice to the incredible detail of the work. I know not everyone can afford it, but if you can, and you’re a fan of the musical, I do think being in the UK – the only place in the world where it got a proper cinema release – is a good thing."

Minchin also added that as the movie was in part funded by Sony, there was also a financial benefit for them.

"Sony isn't a streamer, and therefore retained the rights to release the movie in the UK in the traditional manner. It might be disappointing (and a bit baffling), but it makes sense, and is one of the reasons the film is so good. Xx," he concluded.

It will be released on Netflix in the UK and Ireland on Sunday, June 25, 2023.
