Matilda the Musical is finally available to watch on Netflix UK
It’s been a long time coming, but Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical is finally available to watch on Netflix UK.
Based on the popular stage musical, the film features a Tony-nominated original score by the legendary Tim Minchin and stars Emma Thompson as Miss Trunchbull, Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey and newcomer Alisha Weir as Matilda.
Although UK fans were able to watch the film in cinemas when it was released in December, they missed out on seeing it from the comfort of their own homes over Christmas when it launched on Netflix everywhere in the world… except the UK.

This is due to a partnership between Sony Pictures and Netflix for the adaptation, which included an exclusive theatrical release through Sony in the UK, delaying its Netflix UK release.
This was, of course, a double-edged sword, with many in the US criticising the film's limited cinematic release, while UK fans were upset they couldn't watch it on Netflix until the summer of 2023.
In fact, UK fans were so upset that they directed their frustrations at Minchin, who responded to the backlash in a series of tweets.

While Minchin apologised for the delay, he explained that the decision wasn't up to him, adding: "As filmmakers, we would prefer audiences to see the film in a cinema."
The comedian continued: "The large format and excellent sound do justice to the incredible detail of the work. I know not everyone can afford it, but if you can, and you’re a fan of the musical, I do think being in the UK – the only place in the world where it got a proper cinema release is a good thing."
Minchin added that the deal between Sony and Netflix "might be disappointing, but it makes sense and is one of the reasons the film is so good."
Matilda the Musical is now available to watch on Netflix.
