Master expert picks: Predictions, odds for who wins at Augusta National in 2024

The marquee major tournament on the golf calendar has arrived with the world's top players and select amateurs heading to Augusta National Golf Club for the 2024 Masters.

Fresh off a T-2 finish at the Houston Open two weeks ago, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the favorite to win the 2024 Masters, so much so that he has the shortest odds to win any major since Tiger Woods in 2013, according to CBS Sports.

Woods, it should be noted, is back in the Masters field in 2024, as is a strong contingent of LIV golfers, including defending champion Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson.

And what about Rory McIlroy? Is this the year he gets over the hump and becomes golf's sixth "Grand Slam" winner with a Masters victory? Will Rahm join Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Woods as the only players to win back-to-back Masters? Or will a sleeper emerge during Sunday's final round?

Here's who experts and sports books are picking and predicting to win the 2024 Masters:

Masters expert picks, predictions 2024

Here's who some golf experts have picked to win the Masters in 2024:

CBS Sports' senior golf writer Kyle Porter: "I tried as hard as I could to pick somebody other than Scheffler, but after listening to Viktor Hovland talk about how disciplined a player needs to be with his irons and where he misses -- and then combining that with the outrageous level at which Scheffler is playing (again, he's at 3.2 strokes gained tee to green per round this year while only one other golfer is over 2.0) -- it sure does seem like Scheffler will get a second green jacket." The pick: Scottie Scheffler

CBS Sports' golf writer Patrick McDonald: "I've done the mental gymnastics and concluded that losing Tthe Players Championship was the best thing to happen to Schauffele's Masters chances. His new swing was put under the microscope at TPC Sawgrass, and we identified what his misses were when under the gun. That experience should pay dividends this week as he has statistically been the second-best player in the world this season and has plenty of history around Augusta National with a couple of close calls." The pick: Xander Schauffele

ESPN's Matt Barrie: "I get it. It's Scottie Scheffler vs. the field. But what fun would that be? Matsuyama knows how to win at Augusta (2021), and he's finally healthy again. He comes to the Masters in form. A winner at Genesis, followed by finishing T12, T6, T7. " The pick: Hideki Matsuyama.

ESPN's Scott Van Pelt: "Scottie Scheffler: Scheffler because when he's on the first page Sunday and you didn't pick him, you're going to ask yourself, "Why didn't I pick him?"" The pick: Scottie Scheffler.

ESPN's Mark Schlabach: "I've already written that Scheffler would win by 4 strokes if he's even an average putter this week. I think his new mallet putter gets hot, and he wins a second green jacket by 5. It might not be a daring pick or very original, but you're supposed to pick the golfer who's going to win. Scheffler's stellar ball striking and magical hands around the greens will help him win his second major." The pick: Scottie Scheffler.

Will Cheney, Augusta Chronicle: I picked Jon Rahm five years in a row because he played Augusta National so well, I figured eventually things had to fall in place for him – they finally did in 2023. The same could be said for Xander Schauffele, who owns three top-10 finishes in six starts since 2018. He’s coming into Augusta with top-5 finishes in The Genisis Invitational (T4), THE PLAYERS Championship (T2) and the Valspar Championship (T5). Much like Rahm last year, the 30-year-old is due for something great this week. The pick: Xander Schauffele

Ryne Dennis, Gannett Center for Community Journalism, formerly of the Athens Banner-Herald: Let's be honest. We're watching one of the most consistent streaks any golfer has put together since Tiger Woods ran circles around the field. That's how good Scottie Scheffler has been the past three seasons. And if the past three tournaments he's played has been any indication of how well he's firing balls at pins, just look at his last three tournaments: Arnold Palmer (win), Players (win), Houston Open (2). That's not to mention the three other top-6 showings he's had this year. He's the best player (by far) in the game today. You'd be crazy not to pick him to win this week. The pick: Scottie Scheffler

Dan Spears, Deputy Sports Strategist, Gannett Center for Community Journalism, former Augusta Chronicle assistant sports editor: You know what we haven't had at Augusta in awhile? Some true tug-at-your-heart drama at the Masters. Don't get me wrong, seeing the dominant players emphatically put their stamp on this tournament the past four years has been fun, but we need a tournament people will be talking about for years down the road. 2019 Tiger, 2004 Phil level stuff. Get your breakfast puns together, y'all. It's time for a Grand Slam. The pick: Rory McIlroy.
