Maryland, Pitt, Washington join Islanders for Kleberg Bank College Classic

Whataburger Field may be a few weeks from hosting Texas League games, but the field is already seeing its share of base hits this week including the return of the Kleberg Bank College Classic this weekend.

The ballpark in the shadow of the Harbor Bridge plays host to the annual college baseball event, bringing Maryland, Washington and Pitt to the Coastal Bend along with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

The Islanders faced Kansas at Whataburger Field on Tuesday, falling 13-7 and carry a 3-3 mark into their three-day Kleberg slate.

A&M-Corpus Christi faces Maryland on Friday, Washington on Saturday and wraps the weekend with Pitt on Sunday.

Maryand is 3-1 coming off a road series win at Georgia Southern. First baseman Eddie Hacopian and outfielder Jacob Orr led the Terrapins at the plate in their first series of the season.

Washington (0-2-1) comes to the Coastal Bend still seeking its first win of the season after opening the season with a three-game set at Long Beach State. The finale was ruled a tie after the Huskies were deadlocked at 3-3 after 17 innings. Utility player Jeter Ybarra and infielder Blake Wilson led the Huskies last week.

Pitt is the lone undefeated squad among the four that will play at the Kleberg. The Panthers are 3-0 after sweeping a series against Maine in Port Charlotte, Florida. The Panthers have four players all hitting better than .400 after one week, led by catcher Jayden Melendez and outfielder C.J. Funk.

Scott Malone's Islanders swept Central Michigan to open the season, before dropping three straight to former conference rival Stephen F. Austin and Kansas. Malone picked up his 400th career win on the opening weekend of the season.

Isaac Webb is hitting .379 and leads the team with 11 hits, including four extra-base hits. Drake Kerr is hitting at a .346 clip and Tucker McEnroe is hitting .368. Garrett Gruell is tied with Webb and Kerr for the team lead with six RBI.
