The Marvels’ director Nia DaCosta has explained how her movie will avoid “superhero fatigue.”

The Captain Marvel sequel introduces a new alliance between Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers, Ms Marvel (Iman Vellani) and Monica Rambeau/Photon (Teyonah Parris) after the trio’s powers entangle and cause them to swap places at the most inconvenient times.

In spite of the success of the billion-dollar box office hit of Captain Marvel, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is suffering from a string of flops with Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania and Secret Invasion.

DaCosta has acknowledged that there is a shift in the superhero genre, and even told Total Film: "I think superhero fatigue absolutely exists."

With that in mind, DaCosta has taken a different direction with this project to engage the audience and offer a fresh new tone.

"The biggest difference from the other MCU movies to date is that it’s really wacky, and silly," she explained.

"The worlds we go to in this movie are worlds unlike others you’ve seen in the MCU. Bright worlds that you haven’t seen before."

Equally, this female-led movie differs from the other team-ups in the universe, as this is a new partnership pulled across small-screen and big-screen projects, with Monica last seen in WandaVision, and Kamala only appearing in Ms. Marvel to date.

DaCosta continued: "The Avengers movies are these epic conclusions to chapters of storytelling, whereas this is a team-up within the narrative that we didn’t necessarily expect for Marvel.

"Usually, you wait for characters to show up all together in Avengers movies. We were excited to design a team-up featuring characters that women from all walks of life could relate to."

Alongside the titular stars, former Doctor Who star Zawe Ashton is making her debut in the MCU as villain, Dar-Benn.

The Marvels has a release date of November 10, 2023. Captain Marvel is streaming on Disney+ and available on DVD, Blu-ray and digital download.
