The Marvels Is Lowest Grossing MCU Movie

The Marvels is the lowest grossing MCU movie in its history, according to new reports.

Marvel itself has all but given up on the movie, telling press this weekend, “With ‘The Marvels’ box office now winding down, we will stop weekend reporting of international/global grosses on this title.”

Those numbers in full; after four weeks at the cinema, The Marvels pulled in $80 million in America and around $197 million worldwide, according to Variety. The movie made about $2.4 million on its fourth weekend, and Marvel doesn’t expect it to make any more significant numbers despite it hanging around theatres until the end of the year.

The movie made $46 million in its opening weekend - again, a record low for the MCU, and was followed by the worst second weekend drop-off in performance for a Marvel Cinematic Universe release.

Marvel

Marvel is in the middle of a crisis of confidence with its MCU movies. It has delayed Thunderbolts and Captain America: Brave New World, so only has Deadpool 3 to release next year.

There’s talk of trouble behind the scenes, with rushed production and the recent legal troubles of Jonathan Majors damaging the brand. Majors was due to play the villain across a number of titles ending in Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027, but that is now in doubt.

The Marvels stars Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Teyonnah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms Marvel. It has a Metacritic score of just 50. It’s perhaps most noticeable for introducing The X-Men into the MCU now that Marvel has inked a deal with 20th Century Fox to get its characters back.
