The Marvels' first reactions land ahead of cinema release

The Marvels finally lands in cinemas this Friday, and we now have the first reactions to the new MCU movie.

Directed by Nia DaCosta, the Captain Marvel sequel unites Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) as they team up to take on the threat of Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton).

Ahead of its cinema release, those lucky few to have already seen The Marvels and discovered its potentially universe-altering secrets have taken to social media to reveal their first reactions.

Collider's Ross Bonaime called the movie "short, sweet, and a hell of a lot of fun", adding: "The main trio is a blast together and it's great to have action sequences that are exciting again. Probably the most charmed I've been by a MCU film since No Way Home, and I can't wait to see what this film leads to...".

In a similarly positive review, Pop Culture Planet's Kristen Maldonado wrote on X: "The Marvels is the most fun I’ve had watching a superhero movie in a while! It’s hilarious, action-packed & full of girl power. Kamala was a stand out & so many moments surprised me. There was a great balance of the team, while dropping shocking bombs that will change EVERYTHING."

"Really dug The Marvels," added MovieWeb's Richard Fink. "The best part of the MCU has always been seeing different character interactions and this has been something missing from prior entry. The whole cast is great but Iman Vellani steals the show and cements Ms. Marvel as the future of the MCU."

However, in a more mixed verdict, TheWrap's Scott Mendelson said: "The Marvels is an enjoyable, often hilarious three-star romp. Its' screenplay is downright terrible in terms of plot and structure, but the character chemistry makes it work (Iman Vellani is great) while the refreshingly bright & bold visuals played quite well on an Imax screen."

Here are some more reactions:

The Marvels has been confirmed as the shortest MCU movie yet, clocking in at one hour and 45 minutes. Talking to Digital Spy, DaCosta explained how she always wanted to keep the movie under two hours long.

"I always think about the runtime actually, when I go into a film. I just feel like there's no need to have it long if you don't need to, because 1 hour 45 minutes is pretty average for a movie, so we were all really excited," she noted.

The final trailer for the movie also revealed that we'll be seeing Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie for the first time since Thor: Love and Thunder. We don't yet know how she's involved in The Marvels though – or if she's got anything to do with those X-Men teases.

At least we don't have too long to wait to find out.

The Marvels is released in cinemas on November 10.
