The Marvels director Nia DaCosta defends shortest MCU runtime

The Marvels has already set a new record for the MCU as it's the shortest-ever movie – and that's just how Nia DaCosta wanted it.

Ahead of its release in cinemas this Friday (November 10), it's been confirmed that The Marvels runs for 105 minutes, beating the previous shortest movies, The Incredible Hulk and Thor: The Dark World, which both ran for 108 minutes.

Neither of those movies are exactly the highlights of the MCU, but you shouldn't be worried for The Marvels as the runtime was always part of DaCosta's plan.

"I really wanted it to be under two hours. I always think about the runtime actually, when I go into a film. I just feel like there's no need to have it long if you don't need to, because 1 hour 45 minutes is pretty average for a movie, so we were all really excited," she told Digital Spy.

"I just think you do what's right for the movie. I didn't even know about this runtime thing until I think it was reported on. You have to do what's right for the movie."

The Marvels has a lot going on despite the runtime because, as well as bringing back Brie Larson's Captain Marvel, it also sees the return of Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, aka Ms Marvel.

They have to team up to face a new threat in the form of Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton) when they find that they end up switching places any time they use their powers, leading to some unique fight scenes in the movie.

"We get to add to that history, that [Marvel are] starting to really dig into now, like women beating the shit out of each other," DaCosta added with a laugh.

"We do a lot [of that] in this film, which is really exciting for me, because I love fight scenes. I was very excited to do it. I think the main fight scene, I'm really proud of. It's something you haven't seen before in the MCU, because of the nature of it, the switching."

Could the set pieces also feature an X-Men crossover at some point? Fans certainly think a new teaser revealed that, but at least we don't have too long to wait to find out for sure.

The Marvels is released in cinemas on November 10.
