Saltburn, Emerald Fennell's follow-up to Promising Young Women, looks, well, promising.

The movie is a "beautifully wicked tale of privilege and desire," according to Amazon Studios. Set in the mid-2000s, Saltburn follows Oliver Quick, a student at Oxford University, struggling to find his place, who falls into the world of charming and aristocratic Felix Catton. Felix then invites Oliver to Saltburn, "his eccentric family’s sprawling estate, for a summer never to be forgotten."

Here's everything we know about Saltburn.

The story is set in 2006.

Fennell tells Vanity Fair she enjoyed setting the tale 17 years ago, as it "really knocks the fucking glamour off things. There’s nothing like a Livestrong bracelet and a ‘carpe diem’ tattoo and an eyebrow star and a boot-cut jean that deglamorizes things."

Barry Keoghan and Jacob Elordi lead the cast.

Of Keoghan, Fennell says, "I just thought, That’s a once-in-a-lifetime performer. There’s no equivalent... He’s just so compelling. He’s got a kind of sex appeal and a vulnerability and a physical presence and a sort of darkness, or he can at least communicate these things in a way that is very rare." She continues, "We were looking to make something that is sort of visceral and surprising and dark and hot, and that takes a lot of commitment."

In Elordi's audition, she says, "He just gave this unbelievably potent, relaxed, real performance of a person that could so easily not be real."

Here's the full cast:

  • Barry Keoghan plays Oliver Quick

  • Jacob Elordi plays Felix Catton

  • Rosamund Pike plays Felix's mom

  • Richard E. Grant plays Sir James, Felix's dad

  • Archie Madekwe plays Farleigh, a relative

  • Alison Oliver plays Venetia, Felix's sister

  • Paul Rhys plays a Saltburn estate employee

  • Carey Mulligan

Of Pike, Fennell says, "She’s one of the greatest comic actresses living. And the fact that that’s just one thing in her arsenal, the fact that she’s just that good, it’s fucking crazy."

Margot Robbie is a producer.

Fennell, who wrote and directed the movie, will produce alongside Fennell and LuckyChap Entertainment—the production company led by Margot Robbie, her husband Tom Ackerley, and Josey McNamara.

The film is made by MRC Film and Amazon Studios. "From the second we read Saltburn, we were completely hooked. Emerald is a triple threat filmmaker—she is really one-of-a-kind," Jennifer Salke Salke, Amazon Studios Head, and Julie Rapaport, Head of Movies, said in a statement. "We are thrilled to be working with the incredible teams at MRC and LuckyChap to bring Emerald’s vision to life and to bring the film to millions of people around the world."

The soundtrack has "early 21st century pop bangers."

According to BFI London Film Festival director, Kristy Matheson, the soundtrack is a standout. She explained, "As soon as the credits rolled on ‘Saltburn’ it was clear we’d met our opening night film. Academy Award winner Emerald Fennell returns with an expertly crafted and exhilarating thrill ride of a film that showcases an enormous depth of U.K. talents in front of and behind the camera. With its exceptional performances, delicious plot twists and a soundtrack of early 21st century pop bangers; this hugely ambitious film immediately stole our hearts and we can’t wait to share it with audiences in London and across the U.K. this October."

Saltburn premieres November 24, 2023.

The movie will open London Film Festival in October, and hit theaters a month later. "I’m honored that our film is able to open this year’s BFI London Film Festival," Fennell said. "It is a festival that inspired me so much growing up, one that I followed excitedly from my bedroom on the other side of London. It feels extra-special that Saltburn, this very British tale of excess, is able to make its international debut at the wonderful BFI."
