What Maren Morris Really Thinks About Beyoncé's Shift to Country Music

Maren Morris is putting in her two cents regarding Beyoncé's official shift into country music.

The R&B-pop diva announced her crossover into a new genre during a Verizon commercial, which played in the midst of the Super Bowl game on Sunday, Feb. 11, when new music dropped just before Usher took the stage for his headlining Halftime Show performance.

The country album, the second installment of her Renaissance, entitled Act II, kicked off with the release of her newly unveiled track, "Texas Hold 'Em"—seemingly, an appropriate nod to the Houston native.

Recently, Morris gave her opinion on the hitmaker's shift, saying that she feels Beyonce has "always been genre-less" anyway.

"I think the leaning into country elements, and sort of reclaiming country music back to Black people, because they created the genre, is such a statement," the country songstress told E! News on Feb. 13 while promoting a collaboration with Visible Wireless by Verizon. "Rhiannon Giddens [is] playing banjo on 'Texas Hold ‘Em'... which is such an amazing statement in itself."

The "My Church" singer has often spoken out against the "toxic" culture of the country music scene, most recently while taking a stance against Jason Aldean's "Try That In a Small Town." Following the "drama," she even teased leaving certain aspects of the genre alone entirely.

"The stories going on within country music right now, I've tried to avoid a lot of it at all costs," she told Los Angeles Times in September. "I feel very, very distanced from it. I had to take a step back."

But while she may be taking a "step back," Bey is just getting started—and Morris couldn't be more eager to hear the "Lemonade" singer's new tunes.

"Obviously, like most people, I'm so utterly excited to hear the whole album," she shared with the outlet in anticipation. "I was listening to ‘16 Carriages' this morning and just marveling at the production and the lyrics and the vulnerability."

Beyoncé's full upcoming project, Renaissance Act II, is slated for a March 29 release.
