MANITOWOC – Sure, Memorial Day is often seen as the official start to summer, but let’s not forget the holiday is truly about honoring those who have lost their lives in war fighting for the U.S.

Organizations around Manitowoc County will host events May 27 to celebrate those fallen heroes. Here's a look at what's planned.

The city parade begins downtown at 9 a.m. May 27 at Washington and South Eighth streets, goes down Eighth Street, onto Huron Street and then Michigan Avenue, ending at the Veterans Memorial on North 18th Street across from Evergreen Cemetery.

The Memorial Day Ceremony will be immediately after the parade at the Veterans Memorial. If it rains, the ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. indoors at the Citizen Park Recreation Center, 930 N. 18th St. City staff will set up about 205 chairs either indoors or outdoors for the ceremony.

City leaders will make the decision to cancel the parade by 8 a.m. Monday, and WOMT will announce the cancellation. Call the mayor’s office at 920-686-6980 with questions.

Additionally, prior to the Memorial Day activities, the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 731 will put flags on veterans’ graves at Evergreen Cemetery, 2221 Michigan Ave., at 9 a.m. May 26. The public is invited to help — there are about 2,700 veterans buried at the cemetery.
