Manchester United player Mason Greenwood charged with attempted rape, assault

Manchester United player Mason Greenwood has been charged with attempted rape, controlling behavior and assault, U.K.’s Crown Prosecution Service said Saturday.

The 21-year-old striker is expected to appear in court on Monday, according to Janet Potter, the deputy chief crown prosecutor for CPS North West.

The CPS authorized the Greater Manchester Police to charge Greenwood with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behavior, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, Potter said Saturday in a statement.

“Specialist rape prosecutors from CPS North West’s complex casework unit authorized the charges following a review of a file of evidence received from Greater Manchester Police,” she said.

All three counts are related to the same complaint, Potter added.

Greenwood was initially arrested in January after a series of allegations related to a young woman were posted online.

He has been out on bail, and has been suspended by Manchester United ever since.

In a statement Saturday afternoon, the club acknowledged the charges brought against the player.

“He remains suspended by the club, pending the outcome of the judicial process,” the statement read in part.
