Why are Manchester United failing to deliver the levels of performance and success expected?

The question was asked on a special episode of 5 Live's Football Daily which unpicked all that's going on at Old Trafford.

"So much of it has been defined by the 26-year reign of Sir Alex Ferguson," said The Athletic's Carl Anka on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily Podcast. "I have heard the current squad be described as Frankenstein’s monster or a patch-work quilt.

"There are a number of players who have been brought in by different managers and no overarching Director of Football. So some players have been brought in to play the possession based football of Louis van Gaal, others a more physical style for Jose Mourinho.

"Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for a short period of time wanted to bring in more British talent and play more counter-attacking football. And now there is Erik ten Hag with his transitional style.

"Not all the players fit."

BBC Sport understands United are willing to listen to offers for virtually all their first-team squad this summer as Sir Jim Ratcliffe looks to turn the club back into challengers for major honours.

Rasmus Hojlund, Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho are thought to be exempt from that list.

"They have huge talent so they could facilitate a role in any of the above systems," added Statman Dave. "The problem is how badly this squad has been built.

"The blue print has to be around what Arsenal have done. They have recruited young because they know that will carry them through the next few years. It is perfect. Only Burnley and Chelsea have a lower starting age in the Premier League this season.

"That is what Man Utd need to do.

"If you break the current squad down to those who are under-25 then you have less than half a team. That has been the long-term problem with the club. They have always opted to buy the world's best but that does not give you longevity."
