Man who shot up Tennesee Kroger had been asked to leave his job that morning

The third-party sushi vendor who shot 15 people, killing one, last week in a Tennessee Kroger had been asked to leave his job that morning, Collierville police said Monday.

“The shooter moved into the Town of Collierville in the summer of 2020,” police said in a media release. “He was a third-party vendor working inside Kroger and was asked to leave his job the morning of Thursday, September 23, 2021.”

The shooter was identified as UK Thang, 29, who killed himself after blasting the store in Collierville, a suburb about 30 miles east of Memphis.

The gunfire erupted around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday inside the supermarket as shoppers and employees fled, hiding in freezers or hunkering down in locked offices.

Ten of the victims were employees and five were customers, CNN reported. Mother of three Olivia King, who had just attended church, was shot in the chest and later pronounced dead at the nearby Regional One Hospital.

“Our family is devastated by this senseless act of violence,” King’s family told WHBQ-TV.

As the investigation continued, police were processing evidence including electronic material and crime scene vehicles, as well as interviewing other potential witnesses.

Police also said that four victims in stable condition remained hospitalized and that town and Kroger officials were meeting “to discuss next steps involving employee and community support regarding mental well-being to relief funding.”
