A man was recently found guilty in connection with a 2022 shooting that left a man dead, Oregon officials said.

David Anthony Baynes is accused of shooting his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend in an “unprovoked attack,” according to a March 7 news release by the Washington County District Attorney’s Office.

Baynes was “jealous” that his girlfriend kept in contact with the victim, officials said.

Baynes was leaving his girlfriend’s house in Forest Grove when he saw the victim pull up in a minivan, officials said.

While in his truck, he drove up to the victim’s car and shot him 15 times, officials said.

The man “died within minutes,” the district attorney said.

Baynes left the scene and “ditched” the handgun before driving to a rural area in Yamhill County, officials said.

He put a tarp over his truck, “factory-reset his phone to avoid police detection, and slept in blackberry bushes,” officials said.

The next day, a deputy with the Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office found Baynes and arrested him, the district attorney said.

At first, Baynes said he was acting in self-defense, as the victim was armed, officials said.

Later, detectives learned the victim was not armed, the district attorney said.

Baynes told officials “he knew what he did was wrong,” prosecutors said.

The gun Baynes used was later found by Washington County Search and Rescue Team members, officials said.

Baynes will remain in custody until his sentencing hearing that’s scheduled for April, officials said.

Forest Grove is about a 30-mile drive west of Portland.
