Man in Peru carried around centuries-old mummy ‘girlfriend’ in food bag, officials say

Police in Peru were shocked when they stopped a man carrying an insulated food delivery bag.

Inside wasn’t someone’s Uber Eats order. It was a mummy hundreds of years old.

The 26-year-old man told AFP that the mummy was called “Juanita” and was his “spiritual girlfriend.”

The man told local outlets that his father had taken the mummy from a policeman nearly 30 years ago in exchange for money he owed, but the 26-year-old then became too attached to the remains, Perú21 reported.

“At home, she’s in my room, she sleeps with me. I take care of her,” the man said on social media, as reported by AFP.

The man had been stopped for acting drunk near an archaeological site in Puno, a city in the southern region of the country, according to the BBC.

He said he had brought the mummy with him in the food delivery bag to show off to his friends and denied that he had been trying to sell it, Phys.org reported.

The mummy was in the fetal position and wrapped in bandages inside the bag, according to the outlet.

“It’s not a Juanita, it’s a Juan,” ministry officials confirmed to AFP. Authorities estimate that the mummy was a man around 45 years old when he died.

Cultural officials say the mummy was a male and is between 600 and 800 years old.
Cultural officials say the mummy was a male and is between 600 and 800 years old.

The mummy was between 600 and 800 years old and was taken from the man to protect and preserve the heritage of Peru, authorities said in a release from the Ministry of Culture on Feb. 26.

Authorities said the mummy was about 4 foot, 11 inches tall and was wrapped in a way that was consistent with pre-Hispanic burials, before the arrival of the conquistadors in Peru, according to BBC and the release.

The man is being detained while authorities investigate, Perú21 reported.

Google Translate was used to translate the Ministry of Culture news release and the Perú21 article.
