Man killed in head-on collision in Fresno County that involved three vehicles

One man died and another man was arrested for driving under the influence following a head-on collision late Friday afternoon near Easton.

It happened around 4:10 p.m.

The California Highway Patrol in the Fresno area said 66-year-old Jamie Figueroa of Fresno was driving a silver 2016 Hyundai Sonata sedan southbound on Elm Avenue approaching a four-way stop at American Avenue when he swerved into oncoming, northbound traffic for reasons unknown.

The Hyundai crashed head-on with a gold 2002 Pontiac Grand Am.

The driver of the Pontiac was rushed to Community Regional Medical Center but died there, according to CHP. His passenger was taken to CRMC with major injuries. Neither was identified.

Figueroa suffered serious injury. He was arrested for DUI, as well as for vehicular manslaughter and will be booked into Fresno County Jail when he’s released from the hospital, CHP said.

A third car, a 2005 Honda coupe that was following behind the Pontiac, ended up in a ditch as the driver avoided the collision that unfolded in front of him.

That Honda driver suffered minor injuries, CHP said at the scene.

CHP did not immediately know how fast the Hyundai driver was going at the time of the crash.
