Man falls to death taking photo at Alpine peak

A German man died Sunday after he fell from a peak after hiking in the Austrian Alps.

The 77-year-old man was trying to take a photo of his companion, a 63-year-old Spanish woman, after they reached the summit at the Greitspitze in Tyrol province near the Austrian-Swiss border. When the man stepped back to take a photo from further away, he stepped too close to the edge and lost his balance, falling about 200 feet.

The man’s body was recovered by a police helicopter after a witness who was also at the summit alerted authorities.

The incident occurred a week after ski mountaineer Adèle Millo and a friend fell to their deaths while hiking Mont Blanc in the French Alps. Ski mountaineering involves hiking up a mountain before skiing back down.
