Man dies in Winslow crash after attempted traffic stop in Monroe

TRENTON — A motorist died in a single-vehicle crash in Winslow after an attempted traffic stop by a police officer in Monroe, according to the Attorney General's Office.

The predawn incident began shortly before 4 a.m. when an on-duty Monroe officer tried to stop the vehicle on County Route 723 in Monroe, says an account from the Attorney General's Office.

"Shortly after the attempted stop, the officer came upon the vehicle crashed" on the same road, also known as Flemming Pike, across the Winslow border, it says.

The driver, identified only as a man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The statement offers no additional details, including an identification for the Monroe officer.

"The investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time," it said.

A state law requires the state agency to investigate any death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in an official capacity.

"At this time, the Attorney General’s Office is investigating to determine whether this death falls under the purview of the statute," the statement said.
