Man dies from injuries suffered in ATV accident with an SUV on Erie road Monday

A 22-year-old resident of western New York has died from injuries he suffered when his all-terrain vehicle ran a stop sign and crashed into an SUV in Erie on Monday.

The driver of the ATV, Nathan Weeks, of Angola, died on Thursday, Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook said on Friday. He ruled the cause of death as blunt force trauma due to an auto accident.

Weeks had been at UPMC Hamot, Cook said.

The accident was reported at 10:01 p.m. on Monday at East 26th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. Weeks' Honda ATV was headed north on Pennsylvania Avenue when it ran a stop sign and struck a Honda CRV traveling west on East 26th Street, Erie police said.

ATVs are not permitted on streets in the city of Erie.

The ATV was traveling 45 to 55 mph in a 25-mph zone, said Erie police Sgt. Thomas Dunmire, the accident investigator handling the case. He said the driver of the SUV, a woman, had no stop sign and had the right of way.

The woman was not injured, Dunmire said. He said Weeks suffered injuries including a large laceration to his neck.

Weeks was not wearing a helmet, Dunmire said. He said Weeks was in Erie visiting friends.

The accident remains under investigation, Dunmire said. Investigators have spoken to several witnesses and reviewed surveillance video from the area, according to police.
