Man dead in fatal crash after hitting parked semi on Indy's eastside

INDIANAPOLIS — One person is dead after a fatal crash on the city's eastside Saturday morning.

As family members were gathered around yellow tape learning the news of their loss, a firetruck on its way to the scene flipped over and four firefighters were taken to area hospitals.

According to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police just before 11:30 a.m. officers were dispatched to the underpass near East 30th Street and Massachusetts Avenue. There they found a red vehicle crashed near a parked semi and determined it was traveling westbound on Massachusetts Ave.

Witnesses inside Chuck's Market near the crash said they heard it happen.

"When officers arrived, they found an adult male in the vehicle pronounced deceased on the scene," Sgt. Anthony Patterson with the department said.

Police believe the driver may have lost control, crossed the center lane and crashed into a parked semi, with speed playing a role in the crash.

Meanwhile, city firefighters who were on their way to the crash were involved in one of their own. According to Indianapolis Fire Department, at 11:17 a.m., four firefighters were transported to area hospitals after their firetruck crashed. No other vehicles were involved.

The firetruck made an attempt to maneuver around slowed traffic and a "wide load" while escorted by Indiana State Police, but were unsuccessful with the maneuver flipping over the truck.

The four firefighters sustained some level of injury from minor to serious, but not life-threatening.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police are investigating that crash as well.

The area around Massachusetts Avenue will be closed for the next few hours are police conduct their investigation.
