Man convicted of child rape in Brazil arrested on Martha's Vineyard by federal authorities

MARTHA'S VINEYARD — A man convicted of child rape in Brazil was arrested by federal authorities during a vehicle stop in Vineyard Haven on Nov. 14, according to a statement from the federal Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston.

The 37-year-old undocumented noncitizen was convicted of raping a 5-year-old child in Brazil and sentenced to 14 years in prison before fleeing to the U.S., according to the statement.

"In May 2019, upon his failure to appear for his sentence, the 2nd Criminal Court of Sorriso in the town of Sorriso, Mato Grosso, Brazil, issued a warrant for his arrest," the statement said.

At a time unknown to federal authorities, the man entered the United States illegally, the statement said. Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston became aware of his presence on Martha's Vineyard on Sept. 28, the statement says.

Federal authorities gave the man a notice to appear before a Department of Justice immigration judge when he was arrested. He will remain in federal custody pending his removal proceedings, the statement said.
