Man arrested after barricading himself inside a home for five hours, firing gun

BATTLE CREEK — A man has been taken into police custody after barricading himself inside a home in the 100 block of Lathrop Avenue for five hours on Thursday, according to the Battle Creek Police Department.

Officers responded just before 3 p.m. to the home and determined the man inside was experiencing a "mental health crisis." While outside, they reportedly heard a gunshot inside the house. The man came outside, slammed the door, and then, returned inside the house, police said.

Officers believed the man was alone in the house.

Police blocked off the area around the home as they worked to make contact with the man. As officers continued trying to communicate with the man, he fired several additional gunshots inside the house before shooting out the window at police.

The shots did not hit anyone or any other home or property, police said.

The police emergency response team then released gas into the home, and the man came outside and surrendered to police at 8 p.m.

Police took the man into custody without further incident.

"At this time, the man who barricaded himself on Lathrop Avenue Thursday will receive appropriate medical treatment, after experiencing a mental health crisis," Battle Creek Communications Manager Jessica VanderKolk said in an email Friday afternoon.

The Calhoun County Prosecutor's Office is reviewing charges against the man related to Thursday's incident.
