'That’s what makes Florida State special': Mike Norvell on success of fall sports at FSU

It will be a busy weekend for the Florida State fall athletic programs in the postseason.

No. 23 Seminoles volleyball won a share of the ACC Conference Championship with a victory last Saturday and will play TCU at 5:30 p.m. in Fayetteville, Arkansas in the NCAA First Round.

FSU soccer earned the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Seminoles swept through their opponents at Seminole Soccer Complex and will play Clemson in an ACC Tournament Championship Game rematch in the semifinal of the Women's College Cup at 6 p.m. Friday in Cary, North Carolina.

Finally, FSU football achieved a perfect regular season - going 12-0 - for the first time since the 2014 season and the fourth time in program history. The No. 4 Seminoles will play No. 15 Louisville in the ACC Championship game at 8 p.m. Saturday at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

Seminole football head coach Mike Norvell expressed excitement over the success of the programs.

“It’s awesome for all of the programs. To see the continued progression with Coach [Brian] Pensky and what they are doing in soccer. Coach [Chris] Poole in volleyball, it’s remarkable the season they’re having. As we all continue to aspire for more and put our best foot forward. That’s what makes Florida State special,” Norvell said at Monday’s press conference.

“This is an athletic department and university that’s striving for excellence. We’re trying to do that on the field but also in what we are doing off the field. When you’re around success, like-minded people who have a desire to push and achieve to the best of their ability, it’s contagious within our department.

“We are huge fans of all the programs.”

The praise for success was not limited to the fall sports, as Norvell shouted out FSU men's and women's basketball for their successful starts.

The women's team has a win over powerhouse Tennessee and is off to a 5-1 start. The Seminoles host Arkansas in the ACC-SEC Challenge at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Tucker Civic Center.

Men's basketball is 4-1 and coming off winning the Sunshine Slam Tournament Championship, which included a win over No. 18 Colorado.

"Basketball is starting off and Brooke [Wyckoff] and the team started off with a great start. Leonard [Hamilton] and the basketball team had one setback but came back with a remarkable top-25 win. That's what this department is about. We have great people and great student-athletes.

"We're really grateful for the opportunity we have with our shot come Saturday night."
