Maize high school QB recruit Avery Johnson makes it official, signs with K-State football

With purple-clad family once again surrounding him, Maize High School quarterback Avery Johnson made it official on Wednesday morning: He’s a Wildcat.

Johnson signed his national letter of intent to start his college football career at K-State, where the four-star quarterback prospect is arguably the highest-profile player in Chris Klieman’s 2023 Kansas State recruiting class. The Wildcats are coming off a Big 12 championship and are set to play Alabama in the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Eve.

Johnson was recently honored as a two-time Top 11 pick on the Kansas all-state high school football team by The Eagle after leading Maize to a second straight Class 5A championship game appearance and finishing his senior season with 2,768 passing yards, 817 rushing yards and 44 total touchdowns.

Johnson has graduated from high school early and plans to enroll at K-State and join the team in time for spring ball.

Before he heads off to Manhattan, however, Johnson is playing in two high school all-star games. He already produced a highlight-reel play in his first appearance, scoring a dazzling, 40-yard rushing touchdown to lead his team to a victory in the U.S. Army All-America Bowl this past weekend in Frisco, Texas.
