Mahwah OKs budget with lowest tax increase in 20 years

MAHWAH — The Township Council has approved its lowest tax increase — 1.29% — in 20 years.

The 2024 $47.8 million municipal budget, up $1.18 million or 2.54% from last year, was approved unanimously by the Council.

"The portion to be raised by taxes is $28.2 million, up $401,319 or 1.44 percent," Council President Robert Ferguson said. "On the average Mahwah home valued at $480,669, the municipal portion of taxes will be up 1.29%, or $30 per year," Ferguson said.

Among the capital purchases financed by the 2024 budget are:

  • $2 million for road paving and improvement projects;

  • $1.3 million for vehicle purchases, including $500,000 toward a replacement for Ladder Truck 2, $325,000 for a new dump/plow truck, $254,000 toward the replacement of Ambulance 2 and $240,000 for four Police Department SUVs;

  • $150,00 for first-time purchase of tasers for the Police Department;

  • $100,000 for park and field repairs.

Phase One work began in February on a new $15 million to $17 million Department of Public Works facility on Micik Lane.

"The contractor started demolition site work in late February," Business Administrator Benjamin Kezmarsky said. "The expected timeline for phase one is nine months."
