In December 1980, fans of procedural cop dramas met a former Navy SEAL-turned-private investigator named Thomas Magnum in the pilot episode of Magnum P.I. Portrayed by Blue Bloods star Tom Selleck, the series followed the titular character as he balanced an ostentatious life of luxury in Hawai'i with solving different kinds of security cases that he chose at his own will. The CBS show quickly gained a massive following and it eventually become a staple on television for eight seasons.

After the final episode aired in May 1988, viewers hoped they'd get to see Magnum's world revived in the future. Well, they got their wish in October 2018, when the reboot of Magnum P.I. debuted on NBC and Jay Hernandez stepped into the iconic role. Just like the last time, folks couldn't get enough of the show and hoped it would have a long run on TV.

Sadly, this isn't the case, and television goers learned from Deadline that Magnum P.I. will end after 5 seasons on NBC. The outlet further confirmed that the series be split into two parts, after the first ten episodes aired finished airing in April. This will make the final installment a total of 20 episodes. As for the reason behind the reboot's cancellation and when it could come back, well, it turns out it's just as complicated as some of Magnum's investigations.

Why was the Magnum P.I. reboot canceled?

When Deadline announced Magnum P.I.'s fate in late June, the outlet explained what may have caused the drama to be canceled.

According to the report, the cast's contracts were up for negotiations on a potential season 6 of Magnum P.I. This left NBC with three options for the show's future. The network could either pick the show up for another set of episodes, extend the cast's contracts, or end the series.

It's also important to note that this isn't the first time NBC has canceled Magnum P.I. In May 2022, the show got axed after season 4 due to the licensing fees paid to the show's original network CBS in order for it to air on NBC. Luckily, it didn't last long as the series eventually got renewed for season 5 and a possible season 6 just two months later in July 2022.

As for when Magnum P.I.'s final episodes will air, that's to be determined. Season 5 aired its midseason finale in late April, with the final set of episodes not currently on NBC's fall 2023 TV schedule. This infers that the series could return in winter 2024, a detail Deadline also mentioned. That said, TVLine noted that the episodes have already been filed and may air sooner than January or February despite the ongoing WGA writer's strike.
