The Los Angeles Lakers were served a first-round exit at the hands of the Phoenix Suns earlier this postseason. And with both LeBron James and Anthony Davis battling injury issues, the 2020 NBA champions certainly weren’t looking capable of making a title-defending run.

This loss for LA marked the start of an incredible run for the Suns. With the Phoenix squad rolling through the Western Conference, it looked as though veteran point guard Chris Paul may finally claim his first NBA title.

But, after the Bucks clinched the Larry O’Brien in Game 6 over the Suns on Tuesday night, that dream run for CP3 came to an abrupt halt.

With Los Angeles in need of more depth at the guard position and Paul quickly running out of opportunities to win a ring, former Lakers president of basketball operations Magic Johnson offered a solution to both of these problems.

“A big three with LeBron, Chris, and AD will equal a NBA championship!” the all-time great point guard wrote on Twitter.

Magic isn’t the only person thinking this way. According to recent reports from Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated, LeBron and the Lakers are gunning to land Paul this offseason.

This move makes quite a bit of sense for the Lakers. After failing to come to a contract extension agreement with starting point guard Dennis Schroder earlier this offseason, LA are in dire need of another veteran PG. As a longtime friend of LeBron, Paul could be a perfect fit for this role.

With the next year of his Suns contract listed as a player option, CP3 could chose to enter unrestricted free agency this offseason. That being said, it seems as though Paul is leaning towards a return to Phoenix in 2021-22.

“I’ll take some time to think about that, but right now you’re just trying to figure out what you could have done more. It’s tough,” Paul said after the Suns’ Finals loss last night. “Great group of guys, hell of a season, but this one is going to hurt for a while. We sort of saw what it takes to get there and hopefully we see what it takes to get past that.”

Paul has until Aug. 1 to exercise his player option.
